(WSB Radio) -- The GBI is investigating a deadly officer involved shooting on I-20 in Newton County.
Before the shooting, a Georgia State Trooper patrolling in Covington clocked the suspect traveling 94 miles per hour in the westbound lanes of the interstate.
At some point during the four mile chase, the unidentified driver got off the expressway, crossed over to the other side and began driving eastbound.
A Covington police officer joined the pursuit near John R. Williams Road and the trooper affected a pit maneuver to stop the vehicle. When the officers approached, the suspect emerged from the car and began firing a handgun. the officers returned fire, killing the suspect.
Neither officer was hurt. A woman in the vehicle also escaped injury.
The crash shut down the eastbound lanes of I-20 for several hours overnight.
