Bodies Recovered From Plane Crash Carnage
LAWRENCEVILLE (WSB Radio) Authorities recovered the bodies of the two people killed when a plane crashed into a home in Gwinnett County.
Gwinnett Fire Cpt. Thomas Rutledge told WSB Radio the victim's bodies were pulled from the wreckage around 7 p.m. Friday.
A male pilot and a female living at the home in the 2300 block of Walker Road died after the plane crashed into the home and exploded Friday around 1:15 p.m.
"There is pretty much nothing left of the structure," Cpt. Rutledge said. "A lot of destruction. There was a tremendous fire and explosion from the impact of the plane."
Two vehicles sitting the garage were turned into clumps of metal after the explosion. The two-story house was almost leveled.
Firefighters stayed at the scene throughout the night to extinguish any hot spots from the wreckage. The bodies were turned over the medical examiner after they were recovered. The names were expected to be released sometime Saturday, authorities said.
There was one person on board the light twin-engine aircraft which had taken off from Briscoe Field en route way to Sparta, Tennessee.
The plane was a twin engine Cessna 310, but WSB's Scott Slade says the aircraft is not based at Briscoe Field.
Neighbors tell WSB's Sandra Parrish that a husband and wife lived in the home and that the husband was able to escape.
National Transportation Safety Board investigator Butch Wilson said it could take days to determine the cause and the investigation will resume early Saturday.
Officials said there was no contact between the pilot and air traffic control, and no distress signal was sent from the plane.
