(WSB Radio) -- Three Atlanta teens will have a long time to think about the kidnapping, robbery and shooting of a Georgia Tech and a Georgia State University Student.

A judge Tuesday sentenced Robert Hodge to 30 years in prison while his accomplices DeAngelo Love and Maurice Brown each received 25 years in prison in the attacks on Patrick Whaley and Carsten Singh in May.

The trio plead guilty to the kidnap, robbery and shooting of Georgia State student Carsten Singh and the robbery and shooting of Tech student Patrick Whaley.

Each defendant faced possible life in prison before reaching a plea agreement. His mother, DJ Whaley, demande the maximum penalty.

"These convicts assaulted by son for no reason," she said.  "They shot him on purpose and left him for dead in a pool of his own blood."

She said her son, an engineering student has yet to recover fully from the May 4 attack.

"He has lost 30-percent of his right lung, and he bears a disfiguring scar that is a foot long on his chest that will forever be a reminder of this horrific assault," she said.

Whaley himself also addressed the court saying he did not deserve what happened to him.

"You never really know the impact of yoru life," he said.  "I will live with this for the rest of my life," he added.

What others are saying

  • Fire
These three should simply be set on fire. They have never, don't and will never add any value to a civil society. Imagine if three white kids beat and shot a black student at Morehouse. This story got almost no play, regionally or nationally.

There is a good spell check program Spell Check Anywhere (SpellCheckAnywhere.Com). It works in all programs, including web, and blogs.
  • Solution to Repeat Offenders
Samurai Swords apparently. See the Baltimore case...
  • How long will they ACTUALLY serve time?
Living in the Home Park neighborhood, we are besieged by repeat offenders robbing houses, cars and people. How long will these offenders REALLY serve before they are out on the street for "good behavior" in jail, but not in their communities? Five years, seven years? And then what? How do we get repeat offenders off of our streets? Where is the logic in having to endure repeated offenses from repeat offenders? Our neighborhood needs some serious help. There will come a time when parents will not want to send their kids to Georgia Tech because they fear for their safety, and rightfully so.
  • Justice
This is the best outcome for this case even if it seems like they got off light. Since the Brian Nichols case the DA's office is gun-shy to go to trial. The last thing the citizens need is some ignorant juror being selected and then not wanting to deliberate in the juryroom. There is a delicate balance in the court system now. These three deserve to be in for life. The crimes they committed were cruel and ruthless and without emotion.
  • Teens Sentenced
People will say that they deserved more time. Prison is a horrible horrible place to spend time. A ex-convict told me one time that he would rather hollow out stone mtn.with a rock hammer than be in prison for 25 years
  • Wow
Sometimes people feel that they have no choice but to rob and steal. But as a college student I can say there is a way out. Education. Moving for And toward a positive future.I Hope they think about this and try there best to change their hearts while they are in prison.
  • Where Were the Parent(s) of the Offenders?
Where were the parent(s) of the offenders?
Were they totally oblivious to their offspring's criminal activities? Pretty sad folks!! Time for judges to drag some parents into the court house!
  • Repeat Offenses
I am glad they weren't given bail to attack again!

That's the problem with plea agreements. The DA need to their job & stop taking the easy way out with pleas. For any thugs to attack any innocent person then get a slap on the wrist is an outrage. No telling what kind of complications the victim will have because of missing part of his lung.
