Gwinnett Starts Immigration Enforcement
(WSB Radio) -- The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office begins a program today that will allow specially trained deputies to enforce federal immigration law.
The department had to apply and was approved for the new program in July. Nearly 20 deputies have spent the last four weeks in Charleston, S.C. in training by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
As known as 287 G, the program allows deputies to search the ICE database each time someone is taken into custody to determine if they're in the country legally.
Gwinnett will join Cobb, Hall, and Whitfield counties which already participate.
The program has been championed by illegal immigration foes and decried by immigrant rights and civil liberties groups.
Sheriff Butch Conway plans to outline the county's role in the program at a press conference later today.
What others are saying
- Great Job if it worksThis is a win win in multi-fold if that happens. Less crime, safer roads, less expense in health care, less crowd in the emergency rooms public parks and public schools.
The only problem I see here is the contract jobs getting more expensive. But I am ready for that as it will benefit more jobs for other folks. - ImmigrationLOL, Gwinnett is only about 20 years too late on this move. We moved out of Gwinnett because we thought they should rename it Gwinnexico County.
- illegals???I had called the Gwinnett police department on illegals emptying a house out at 11pm at night, the police said they could do nothing because they coundn't I.D. them, so they couldn't tell if they owned the house or not!!! Yeah! that really happened!!! So I guess they do need training to I.D. illegals!! Hopefully this will be tax dollars well spent!!! Half the jail will be emptied!!!
- Already in Line to Vote!I was naive enough to believe Gwinnett's "illustrious" Commissioners were already in this program. Yet another failure on their part.
- Down at the border....I just got back from Southern Arizona and was there 13 days. I got stopped by the Border Patrol four times and checked to see if I was legal or if I was transporting illegals. The last time I was stopped I told the young man "you are looking in the wrong place, they won't be out here in the interstate, they are in Atlanta." He was amused. Send them back now.
- Imagine that!A sheriff trying to uphold the law and there are certain groups that will oppose that.
All counties should already be doing this. - At Last!Thank God someone is finally doing something. I do not know who is responsible, but you have my heartfelt thanks. You have the courage to do what Bush, McCain, Obama and the rest do not.
This may help some of the peoplewho are out of work find some of those "Jobs Americans Won't Do", as Bush put it.
Again, thank you, Sheriff, or whomever is responsible. - About TimeIt's about time someone did something. Hopefully they will send them back to where ever they came from and tell them to STAY OUT of the United States, unless they enter this country legally.
- 287G Great Use of Tax Dollars287G allows the Sheriff's Office to finally hand over illegal aliens to ICE, who can then deport. Some aliens will then move out of the Counties that use this VALUABLE TOOL, saving tax dollars. ALL 150 plus Georgia Counties should get federal funding and have this implemented.
GREAT JOB SHEIFF CONWAY, Sheriff Paxton, PLEASE COPY CAT!!!! - Good riddanceIt's about time!
- ImmigrationI think it's a great idea, there are so many people in Gwinnett that drive without a license and so much crime.I think this program is very much needed.
- I like itI don't mind my tax dollars going to something like this. Buying land from a developer who happens to be a friend of a member of BOC Gwinnett to build a park - I have a big problem seeing my tax dollars spent on that.
Good job Sheriff Conway. Crazy that our guys have to be trained to do this, but as long as it is happening I am happy. - Who are they kiddingThe only reason that they are trying to identify the people here illegally is so that they can provide welfare and healthcare to them.
Who cares if they identify them, no one is going to DEPORT THEM.
I could have saved the County a lot of money. With just a single tank of gas and a ride two miles from my home to Lawrenceville, I could point out 1,500 and I didn't even need to be trained. Him, him, him, him, him, him.
I guess the easiest of all are the ones that jump in the bed of my truck when I stop at QT to get gas.
