I-75, I-575 Toll Plans

ATLANTA (AP) Georgia's Department of Transportation is reported to be planning an announcement about an ambitious project to build toll lanes along Interstates 75 and 575 in Cobb and Cherokee counties, north of Atlanta.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution says the project will be announced this week. But the newspaper reported Tuesday that the DOT will drop its exclusive relationship with the companies that first proposed the projects and will open them up for bidding in an attempt to save money.

The project would add two or three reversible lanes along the existing highway at a cost of about $400 million. Motorists willing to pay a toll could enter them to avoid congestion.

What others are saying

  • ATTENTION DOT DUMHEADS
If yoo want to build a toll road, build the outer perimeter now instead of 20 years from now.
  • Vote these idiots out of office. We shouldn't be paying for roads when our tax money is already used. Vote the bums out!
  • Toll Roads
    What Amanda said!!!!
  • You Must Be Kidding
Where are they planning on putting the lanes? Are they planning on taking over 2-3 lanes of what already exists? If so, then it will defeat the purpose. And how are they planning for exits? More like the one where people died in the bus crash? Why are people in Atlanta so opposed to a light rail system like they have in the NYC and surrounding suburbs? People commute from New Haven to NYC every day and it is done efficiently with the use of trains. Maybe they need to look at DC and how they took I-66 and made it a toll road in the mornings for travel into the DC area. What about endorsing alternatives - the best one being - telecommuting and giving companies tax incentives to work with technology? Aren't we also supposed to do something to lessen carbon emmissions - toll roads do nothing for that. How backwards can you be? This is a very old-fashioned way to not fix a problem.
  • Toll Lanes
Didn't think you could charge a toll on a highway that's funded by fed funds. Need to look at that. Even if it is allowed this is ridiculosus. Let's SOLVE the traffic problems instead of finding a way to make money off of them.
  • Stuff we don't need
With the GA 400 toll road being paid off, they have to think of some new toll roads. Otherwise, the Georgia State Toll Road Authority will have nothing to do, and they will have to go home. These people make me sick.
  • Toll Lanes
I-75 doesn't need any toll lanes. I-75 is already 10 lanes wide going north of town and widens to 6 and 7 lanes wide north of I-285. What is the DOT going to do, restrict lanes on I-75 to toll use only? That would be inherently stupid. The GA-DOT should just widen I-575 and leave it at that.
  • Thanks for making us pay more to live
    around Atlanta, Ga.
  • I-75, I-575 Toll Plans
So, our tax money pays to build the roads and then they charge us to use them? That's goof for me how?
