Lilburn Mosque Vote Tonight
(WSB Radio) -- The Lilburn City Council is set to vote tonight on a controversial rezoning request that would allow a mosque, gymnasium, and cemetary to be built on eight acres of land at Lawrenceville Hwy. and Hood Road.
The Lilburn Planning Commission voted unanimously to recommend denial of the rezoning request.
"It took into consideration our future land use plan and certainly parking and traffic played a factor in that as well," City Manager Bill Johnsa tells WSB's Sandra Parrish.
For the past 11 years, about 90 families in the Muslim congregation of Dar-E-Abbas have worshiped in two 2,000 square foot buildings on the property partly owned by Mayor Diana Preston. She will recuse herself from the meeting and vote.
Attorney Doug Dillard who represents the congregation says the planning commission's actions may have violated his clients constitutional rights and he has already notified the city that a denial by the city council will result in litigation.
Tonight's 7:30 meeting will be held at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center due to the large crowds expected. Public comment will be limited to 30 minutes for each side before the vote is taken.
What others are saying
- sooo...Jeremy, how does it feel to be a bigot?
- Lilburn MosqueAslama Alaykum,
To all of my Muslim brothers and sister I would like to say Allah "God" is your side and Insha alah "God willing" with his help we will build the mosque, gymnasium, and The Muslim cemetary. For all of you haters whether you like it or not we are here to stay..... FYI: Islam is the fastest growing religion in the USA and in the world.... So come join us!! - This is a good idea. Then people won't have to argue. I live in Lilburn and every Friday, the mosque is full and there's traffic. So, the mosque needs more space and people will be happy.
- Alpharetta and Lilburn MosqueForsyth County recently passed an approval for a Mosque in a small neighborhood. There were never any traffic studies, there is no city/county sewer there yet, yet the County Commisioners gave approval because they felt "they had no choice" There were numerous neighbors there against it, concerned as there are no sidewalks, no traffic lights, and two cars can't pass each other since the road is so narrow. And most of the members don't even live in the County! So much for tax base support! They plan to build a 700 seat mosque, 300 parking spaces that was recently reduced to 150 spaces (but the PLAT still shows the potential for parking in the same area)additional recreation buldings and soccer field are OK on one road is a dirt road??? And after the fact on the Masjid Mosque yahoo group website they have someone that regularly posts who goes by the name "Jihad"???? The man representing the group made a statement that they wanted to be in a quiet community, but that they intended to fight anyone against their plans to build wasn't a very neighborly thing to say. They also promised that anyone in the community will have access to their recreational facilities. I haven't heard of anyone having free access that wasn't Muslim except to kiss babies and shake hands! What happens is once they build they will continue to seek ammendments because of the whole "squatters" rights that many existing mosques are fighting about, expansion expansion expansion!! Just like in Lilburn. We already have two churches too many around us. And we are tired of paying for all of our destroyed mailboxes because of our "small neighborhood" becoming so congested already!! Good luck Lilburn!
- Prevention is better than cure.It is a time when US tax payer dollars are funnelled into other nations to build nuclear bombs by the killer peace lovers. It is only last few weeks ago when FBI shut down few mosques for doing this. Check this link if you doubt http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/sns-dc-iran-seizures,0,6180398.story
I definitely don't need that to happen in my backyard. I cannot believe in people who cover the faces.
Who knows what else is covered up.
