Missing Boy Found, Charged
(WSB Radio) -- Authorities in north Georgia plan to file criminal charges against a 14-year-old Gilmer County boy who left home early Wednesday morning and stayed gone for fourteen and a half hours.
Gilmer County Sheriff Stacey Richardson tells Channel 2 Action News "we're certainly thrilled that's he's home safe, that's the main thing. Now we've got to look at why he left." He added "we're going have to talk to him to find out what the situation was to cause him to do this, because he caused a pretty extensive search."
The parents of Josh Chastain may also have to reimburse the county for the cost of the search, which included dozens of deputies, a GBI K-9 unit and a Georgia State Patrol helicopter.
The legally blind teen was found around 8:30 Wednesday night by his older sister walking with his dog along a road about a mile from the family's Ellijay home.
His father, Chris Chastain, says "he's quiet, he's still not really talking. He's not really said anything, but he's OK."
According to family members, Josh Chastain suffers from depression.
Sheriff Richardson says the teenager faces juvenile runaway charges.
What others are saying
- So this is another child from a broken home (or at least broken relationship)with major problems. It is time for America to wake up and see what divorce / separation / etc. is doing to our children. Parents need to grow up, stand up, and stop making the children pay the ultimate price. I absolutely HATE divorce and what is does to children.
- my sonLisa,
You may have raised him since your with his dad. I gave birth to him and I am his mother! I appreciate you helping raising him but I am his mother! It is not by my choice. I have a stepson to but I don't make him call me mom. That's okay he is getting the help he needs that's MOST important and he knows I love him and there for him no matter what!
Denise Chastain - joshThat was my son missing and you dont even no how hard it was.i thank god that we found him and to read about that he may be charged that is the police jod to help find any missing person. i have rased josh since he was little. he is getting the help he needs. I want to thank everyone that help us find our son.please keep him in your prayers.
- I AGREE WITH THE MOTHER!Please everyone keep him in your prayers.
Thanks soooo much for all your support for my little brother!!
D.S. - my sonTo the concerned ppl,
My son is a good kid. Excels in school. I understand he needs to be taught a lesson but he has learned it already. He is getting the help he needs plus counseling. The police should drop the charges b/c he is a good kid and he has learned his lesson. He needs help not charges b/c he is already depressed and so quiet and shy that it would make it worse. I am glad my son is home and thank the police for all their contribution to this case but isn't that what their job is, that it is what I have always thought. Thanks so much for all your prayers and support pls. keep praying for his depression.
Denise Chastain - Missing boy who was foundMakes me ashamed to admit being from Georgia. These people pay taxes, they should tell these people to take their talk of reimbursement and stick it in their ear. The boy sounds like he needs help, depression is no joke. Get off their backs!
- why are the facing chardes i dont get that hes found and home and safe!!! and atleast nothing really serious happend i mean seriously i just wish they would charge him for that!!!!! I'm just glad hes found and thats all that matters to me. if i were a judge i wouldnt face any chrages.. You know why cause i think that he's found is good enough and running off away from home is his punishment. thanks
- Missing BoyI was sick to my stomach yesterday when I heard this child was missing. I live in Ellijay and couldn't imagine what his family was going through. His family has been through enough. Let's all be thankful he's alive and unharmed. Write it off to a training session.
- Charges for Depressed Boy???Outrageous! This Legally Blind boy couldn't be found by an "extensive" search? His sister met up with him a mile from home with his dog!
If Gilmer County is this inefficient, I don't need to visit Elijay....might be too dangerous for tourists! - 1-Being a Runaway is a crime, it is not if you are an adult.
2-Do tou have any idea how much money it costs to operate a helio per hour. All of this when parents are saying "he's never done this" "he's a good kid" all of these resources wasted when they could have been used more somewhere else, all because a brat decided to runaway. yes he should have been charged. Teens need to be accountable for their actions. As far as the Law enforcement doing their jobs, It looks to me like they did, both during the search and after. - Missing BoyWhy in the world are they going to charge him? This is just wrong! I live in Ellijay and the search was not as big as they are putting on! Over half of Gilmer County did not know he was missing and I live 2 miles from this boy and had no clue till around 5 yesterday evening he was missing. When Christy Cornwell went missing everyone looked and nothing against her but when a child goes missing they " Gilmer County authorities" look at as a runaway and say the child will come back. We need more involvement than this! These are children wether they runaway or go for a walk we don't know till they are found! We all need to come together a little more and help search this is not the only child in Gilmer County this past year that has left home.
- MONEY- MONEY -MONEY--CHARGE THEM FOR WHAT? THAT IS THEIR JOB. THAT IS WHAT THEY GET PAID FOR.
- SheriffOur Sheriff's name is Stacey Nicholson.
- Missing boy foundBig tough authorities to file charges against a blind child who went for a walk and probably couldn't see where he was. This is disgusting. These authorities are the ones that need charges filed against them. This is equal to fulton county charging the man for exchanging a marta token to another person, or cobb county for charging the little girl that had a wallet with a tiny chain attached to a toy. Too many authorities do not have any sense of justice vs the laws.
- SadHurts my heart to think of what this kid is going through. I used to pick on other kids like this when I was in school and I feel so awful for it now.
