Sandy Springs Scientology Vote
(WSB Radio) -- The Church of Scientology is one step closer to relocating its Georgia headquarters from Dunwoody to Sandy Springs.
On Thursday night, the city's planning commission recommended approval of a rezoning request that will allow the religious group to renovate a vacant office building on the corner of Roswell Road and Glenridge Drive.
The approval, which will be forwarded to the Sandy Springs City Council for a vote on December 15th, was granted after an attorney for the Scientologists submitted a renovation plan that did not add square footage to the building, placed a maximum occupancy for the building at 170 and included restriping and repaving of the parking lot to create 111 parking spaces.
Fearing increased traffic and noise in the mostly residential area, more than 700 people who oppose the rezoning have signed a petition asking the City Council to vote no on the Church of Scientology's request. The petition drive is also supported by the boards of directors of sixteen Sandy Springs' neighborhood associations.
What others are saying
- They are failing everywhereThere is one thing to be happy about, it is that $cientology is draining its active present time members for more money, and causing many to leave or be financially ruined.
Aside from the rising abuse, the lives of these poor fools is getting harder and harder.
I have met a few that did not know I am THE RONBOT HUNTER, and they told me their story of why they failed and lost their homes to foreclosure.
Their new buildings are always empty of students and the few left are hit-upon for more and more donations. Their news ads are failing to bring in more fools, and they can't keep this up in violation of their own conditions formula.
The Godless cult of greed is failing and the conditions formula is not working to get them out of the hole.
THE RONBOT HUNTER
ALL RIGHTS RESERVED - Zoning variances are not a guaranteed rightRezoning requests are granted at the community's favor. They are not automatic rights granted to anyone who asks. I am a bit confused that this community has been so opposed to granting variances and yet the planning commission will recommend a green light on this. Sounds like they're not listening to their constituents.
- Dilapidated Scientology BuildingsAn unscrupulous cult like Scientology deserves no consideration. Scientology is one of the worst neighbors you can have. Just ask the people who live right next to the cult in Hollywood on L Ron Hubbard way. They have their street closed every weekend and get harasses by creepy Scientology security guards.
More than likely thought Scientology's Sandy Springs building will just sit empty and dilapidate like the one they own in Pasadena California.

You don't want them in the state of Georgia. Say No to scientology. - @ GiaI agree that Scientology is a goofy deal- maybe even a bad deal, but this is the US and even goofballs have the right to worship as they please. If the zoning ordinance allows the proposed usage and the group is in compliance with other established regs, they deserve the approval, even if neither of us particularly like them.
Far too many zoning cases are decided by NIMBYs who want to close the gates the moment they move into an area. I'm glad to see one decided by the rule of law for a change. - Bad callThe residents are right to oppose this re-zoning. Scientology is a notorious bad neighbor. Just ask other cities who have been bullied by this organization posing as a religion.
Better yet, read the news coming out of Australia regarding Scientology. - Property RightsToo bad the residents couldn't purchase that vacant building and use it someway, either leased out or maintained as a community center. I would have donated a few $$$ to them for their cause! (I actually remember the concept of being "grandfathered" in being a viable argument in property cases. That Dunwoody owner with the chickens gets my sympathy.)
- Right callSounds like the planning commission made the right call on this one. Personally, I think the Scientologists are nutty as fruitcakes, but they DO have a right to the full use of their property. To argue that any traffic they might bring to the area is somehow worse than the traffic caused by existing residents is a silly argument. Just because someone moves into an area first doesn't mean that they should be able to deny other folks the fullest and best use of THEIR property.
Bravo, planning commission!
