What others are saying
- horse racingAbsolutely we should be able to vote on gambling...and Sunday liquor sales too. We keep hearing talk about democracy and freedom but then the people we elect are afraid to let us decide these issues for ourselves and let themselves get bullied by a bunch of preachers. What are they afraid of? Democracy in action? I'm an adult and if I don't like it I don't have to go.
- Horse RacingMy thoughts are torn. I do believe that it would bring the state a lot of money, but I also see how people are. No I don't think the gov't should tell people how to spend their money, but I do see how stupid people are when it comes to the lottery. Gambling and alcohol are two things that some people don't know how to control. And if you want to throw in that it is cruel to the animals...thats just another problem I have. So I guess I would have to say NO to the whole deal. And what does religion have to do with this?
- Not a gambling issue, but a cruelty issueI could care less if people want to gamble. However, horse racing is a very cruel and disgusting practice. About 800 racehorses die each year from fatal injuries suffered on US racetracks. Animals are treated as investments to their "owners", rather than the living, breathing creatures that they are. From overbreeding which causes genetic defects, to racing animals who are too young, too fragile, or already injured, there is NOTHING HUMANE about horse racing! The only thing a race horse can look forward to is their eventual slaughter, for sale of their flesh overseas for human consumption or to provide horse meat to glue factories. What kind of life is that?
Come on, it's 2009. Go gamble your money away in a nice, clean, air-conditioned casino where the only cruelty happening is to your checking account. - gamble away, but...animal racing is cruel. gamble all you want, but leave animals out of it.
http://tinyurl.com/2yqd8q - legalize bettingWhy not? Think Lawmakers also should allow state wide alcohol sales on Sunday too.
- Horse BettingIt's not the government's responsibility to regulate people's individual choices. If they want to throw their money away, and the industry is being run on the level, let 'em.
- HorseracingThis is a no-brainer. Georgia absolutely should legalize parimutuel wagering. The jobs and tax dollars created would be signifcant. If you want proof, just drive a couple of hours to Shorter, Alabama, and see the huge racetrack complex/hotel that track-owner Milton McGregor has built. See also how many of the patrons are from Georgia. Now, if we can only figure out a way to keep all the Bible-thumping Baptists from scuttling this (and doing everything they can to shove their religious beliefs down everyone else's throats).
- Horse racingI wish the Christian Coalition would just stay out of my life. I don't need them trying to save me from myself. I am an adult and if I choose to gamble, or heck even if I want to buy a bottle of wine on a Sunday, that should be my choice, not theirs. The Constitution is the law of the land, not misinterpreted or cherry-picked Bible verses.
