Braves, Wagner Agree on Deal
(WSB Radio) The Braves have found their new closer.
Foxsports reports that the team has reached a deal with veteran lefty Billy Wagner, who ranks 6th all time in saves.
The deal is reportedly for one year and is worth $7 million.
Wagner, 38, must first pass a physical before the contract can be finalized.
He missing most of the 2009 season while recovering from ligament surgery, stemming from an injury in September 2008.
This past year the closer duties were split between Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez. The Braves have offered both pitchers arbitration.
Wagner returned from his surgery to pitch 15 2/3 innings for the New York Mets and the Boston Red Sox. He posted a 1.72 ERA, with 26 strikeouts.
Wagner has a 2.39 career ERA, 1,092 strikeouts in 833 2/3 innings, and more saves than any active pitcher except Trevor Hoffman and Mariano Rivera.
