(WSB Radio) Dunwoody Police are investigating after a man died while being detained for allegedly shoplifting at the Wal-Mart on Ashford-Dunwoody Road around 12:45 Saturday afternoon.  Sgt. Mike Carlson tells WSB when a loss prevention officer tried to stop 38-year-old Marty Bridges, a fight broke out.

"During this altercation, the suspect went limp.  They rolled him over and he had low breathing and a low pulse.  Two other bystanders came by and started to administer CPR," said Carlson.

He was taken to Northside Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Carlson says Bridges was not pepper-sprayed, but did hit his head on the concrete outside.

"It appears that he hit his nose on the concrete; but at that time,  he was still fighting.  It was later on where the fight moved outside into the walkway where he ended up losing consciousness," said Carlson.

An autopsy has been completed, but the DeKalb County Medical Examiner's Office is still awaiting several test results, including toxicology reports.

What others are saying

  • No stolen merch found
All you people saying such terrible words about this event, its shocking. It is terrible. It was actualy revealed that they found NO stolen merchandise on him. He was killed and you all say he deserved it.
  • Killings at WalMart
Not to be overlooked is that this happened at another WalMart. WalMart has a 400% higher crime rate on a store for store comparison basis for big box retailers. The cost alone to civic finances in dealing with crime at WalMart stores across the nation is staggering. In addition to 5 known persons having been killed at WalMart stores for 'suspected petty theft' by WalMart Loss Prevention, there was also the killing of Djymitri Damour at the WalMart Black Friday stampede last year in Long Island, N.Y. by the WalMart advertising campaign that brought 2000 people to their front door.

Names and locations of persons suspected as shoplifters killed by WalMart Stores Inc. personnel-

Russell S. Palmer, 38- Kansas City, Missouri Dec. 2008

Patrick Donovan, 53- North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Stacy Driver, 30- Atascocita, Texas Aug. 2005 at about 2 p.m. Death ruled a homicide- WalMart paid $750,000 to the family.

    Floyd Watson- Tulsa, Oklahoma

Jan M. Burstein, 29- Las Vegas, Nevada Sept. 2001 Death ruled a homicide

    WalMart- Where people get killed.
  • It looks like you who are friends and family of Mr. Bridges have a duty to perform. Such actions would not go without their consequences.
  • Marty Bridges
If this were your family member would this be ok? For your loved one to die for a petty crime such as shoplifting. I am with Mickey; I knew Marty for many years and I am proud to say he was my friend as well.
  • Everyone of you that eluded to the fact that Marty deserved to die because of shoplifting should be ashamed of yourselves. I work retail and wish that all shoplifters would be prosecuted and have to pay for their bad choices, but wishing or even thinking death is deserved is absurd. Clearly, Marty made a bad decision that day; however, we ALL are imperfect. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.
  • WAL MART SHOPLIFTER
I KNEW MARTY WELL , HE HAD BEEN OUT OF WORK FOR OVER 1YEAR AT LEAST. HE HAS TWIN BOYS AND WAS GETTING VERY DEPRESSED WITH THE HOLIDAYS COMING, I HAVE NOTHING BAD TO SAY ABOUT HIM,ONLY GOOD. MOREOVER, YOU WOULD BE HARD PRESSED TO FIND ANYONE THAT KNOWS MARTY THAT WOULD SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT HIM.
THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE POSTING NEGATIVE COMMENTS WITHOUT KNOWING THE MAN ARE DOING SOMTHING MARTY WOULD NEVER DO. TALK BAD ABOUT ANOTHER HUMAN BEING. HE WAS SOMEONES SON, BROTHER,FATHER AND GOOD FRIEND. HE WILL BE SORELY MISSED
  • Walmart shoplifter death
The silly, morally bankrupt leftist, neo-socialists have told us for years that Walmart will cause us all to die.
  • Rocko's comment
Joe, you are right. They should beat Rocko's head against the concrete a couple of times next time he is doing a misdemeanor like jay-walking, speeding, or a 'california roll' at a stop sign.
  • Marty
Sorry that a family is without a father, brother, or son. Too bad he made a bad choice. Wonder if those who say-good riddance would say the same if their brother/sin/father were the perp? "But for the Grace of God go I"
  • shoplifter's death
I didn't know this man. I don't know what made him do what he did. But to hear people talk this way about a human being. I am sorry for them. My prayers are with the man's family and with the officers who were with him. This is a very sad thing. It is so much sadder to read peoples thoughts.
  • Got what he deserved
I don't care how many yards he ran, the guy was a loser, he got what he deserved, and I couldn't be more glad. I wish this would happen more often. He was scum just like the rest of the criminals on the street.
  • I guess stealing medicine for your kids
when you are unemployed is a crime worth dying for. Do you know what he stole?
    Good comment Mickey
  • I'm glad! That's a godd DRT story. I love it when the criminals get what they deserve.
  • Marty was a good man... i dont know what the circumstances were but for any one to comment that a man should die because he made a bad decision........ this shows what kind of people are in this world. Walk in a mans shoes before judging him, i knew the man and he was a human being, whose family is grieving. And i am proud to say Marty was my friend for many years.
  • Amazing comments
According to most of the comments on this board two wrongs can now equal a right. Perhaps now when someone is stopped for speeding(not a felony) the police should just shoot the criminal.
  • Shoplifter
He brought this on his self, sad but true.
  • Shoplifter-Marty
It is very sad...but when someone does something that is criminal, that persons HAS to know there could be dire consequences. Whenever a "criminal" is killed during the commission of a crime, I'm glad, because then taxpayer dollars are not spent trying to defend/commit him/her.
  • Merry Christmas!!
Looks like someone is about to get paid a HUGE amount of money. Sad to say that we live in a country where trying to stop a criminal will get you sued. But the world is a little bit of a better place with one less shoplifter.
  • Shoplifter-Marty
The rent-a-cops had every right to protect their merchandise and "Marty-the-football-star" had no right to steal it. The outcome is not pretty, but "Marty" is to blame for what happened, no one else.
  • One less expense for the taxpayers
"It appears that he hit his nose on the concrete;"

Awww...hopefully his nose hit the concrete several times.

Too bad. Steal stuff? Suffer the consequences.
  • Good!
One less reckless criminal on the streets. I couldn't be more pleased.
  • Works for me!
A dead thief and the good were recovered. All is well. Merry Christmas!
  • SAD
This is a terrible outcome. I support the rights of retailers or citizens to protect themselves from theft, but this is still a bad result.
  • Here we go.....
And we have to wait to see the "victim's" family come out and call him a good man. Then they'll sue everyone involved....including Walmart of course. Crime and stupidty should be very painful...and in this case, it was.
  • Good Deal!
At least this story had a happy ending, huh Mingo?
  • Marty Bridges
Marty was the 7th freshman in the state of Ga to ahieve 1000 yds rushing, college athlete, UPS employee. What did he have that was so important the rent-a-cops felt they had to "pin him down in a dogpile" according to WSBTV?
A bad decision, but not worth being killed.
  • Don't do the crime.....
  • Shoplifter Dead
I think the security guard deserves a medal. That is one less criminal we taxpayers will be forced to pay for.
