Walton County Robber Killed
(WSB Radio) A robber is dead after he stuck up a Dollar General store near Monroe in Walton County.
"One of the deputies on patrol spotted the suspect vehicle and tried to get him to stop," says Walton County Chief Sheriff's Deputy Bruce Wright. "But the suspect refused to stop."
Wright says that triggered a 10-mile chase in which officers from Walton, Monroe and the state patrol chased the robber into Barrow County.
"A Georgia State patrol officer did a pit maneuver ," says GSP Lieutenant Paul Cosper. "The vehicle left the road and, subsequently, struck a tree. The driver was ejected and was killed."
Cosper says the robber died later at Barrow Medical Center.
Officers identify him as 41 year old Derwin Scofield of the Winder area. No other injuries were reported in the incident.
What others are saying
- Durwin SchofieldGossip & Rumors are the two evils of this world. We realize everyone has opinions. But when others don't bother to ask first and just make assumptions, there's nothing more daming to someones reputation. Regardless, of what did or didn't happen Durwin wasn't a serial killer, he didn't molest children, he didn't hurt anyone, but himself. And now, he's hurt his family, they are good people and deserve some respect for their son, brother, sister. We want them to know, that we love them and stand by them regardless of what comes from all of this. Support is what they need, knowing that others care and not judge. I'm not a bible thumper, but compassion comes free.
- DerwinSo that's my say. Sorry if I rambled. If you say he was good to people, then I have no reason not to believe you. All I have is that young memory. Once again, I appologize for even bringing any of this up. I wish you all peace in your grief and hope that your hearts will heal from his loss.
- DerwinI guess the lesson here is that we should all teach our children to get a good education so that they are never driven to desperation. We should also teach them that bullying is one of the most reprehensible acts that a child can engage in. It is not only wrong, it is dangerous. If I were a weaker kid who could not settle the situation with my fist, I might have turned out to be like those Columbine kids that you mention. Derwin might not have made it out of his teens so I suppose you should be thankful that you had as long as you did with him.
- DerwinI absolutely HAVE to disagree with Melissa that Derwin didn't do anything wrong, though. Whether you are talking about the incident that happened with me or the incident that ended his life, I think that we would all agree that he WAS doing something wrong in at least those two moments of his life. Under certain circumstances, I can even respect him for knocking over the Dollar General believe it or not. If his family were absolutely starving and he had no other way to get money, then yes... it is illegal, but it is sort of understandable. Family comes first.
- DerwinThey think that they can boost their own status by knocking a bigger guy down a peg. That can backfire though if you don't manage to do what you set out to do. Perhaps this event turned Derwin around too. Maybe he learned a lesson that day and became the good man that you knew as a result of that. He might have stopped trying to bully people that very day. At least Derwin knew better than to mess with me from that moment forward. Course nobody else did either so I guess they were impressed. He probably helped my status out in Junior High. I guess I should have thanked him.
- DerwinI was in a brand new school and was a bit surprised that this was even happening. Nothing like that ever happened again I can assure you. I didn't beat the hell out of him, but he definitely took a beating until we got broke up. Yes, it happened over 20 years ago and I have moved on, but it is my only clear memory of him, and I thought that I would share it (even though in retrospect, it was probably not a good idea). Nonetheless, it was a formative event in my life. I was the guy that nobody disliked and I had never had to deal with anybody messing with me before. Or since for that matter. This made me aware that there are people out there who want to hurt you for nothing more than their own entertainment.
- DerwinOkay... I have had time to think it over and I probably should have kept quiet. You are absolutely right Mrs. Helms. If someone were telling me that my son was an ass after he was dead, I would want to kill them. I should have kept my opinions to myself so as to not speak ill of the dead. For that I appologize. Sincerely. Now that I have spoken up though... You misunderstand I think. I didn't say that he beat me up. And no... I was not the kid everyone picked on. You notice that I mention that this happened only once in seventh grade. Never again in all the classes that we had in the following six years. Why do you think that was? I was bigger than Derwin so I have to give him some respect for at least picking on someone his own size or bigger.
- Derwin SchofieldWell anonymous...My parents, my sister and I were at Derwin's memorial service. There were plenty of people who got up and spoke of the things Derwin did for them. One elderly lady said he always helped her out if she needed repairs on her house, transportation, etc...he was like a son to her. I know he had 2 stepsons that adored him, one of whom he helped get into the military...we all had crappy experiences in jr. high and high school. We forgive those who hurt us but no, we never forget. That point made, Derwin did not do anything wrong. He was a good boy who couldn't seem to find whatever help he needed. But, he did not do anything! God bless you all and I hope your lives are blessed.
- Durwin SchofieldI'm not going to dignify that with an answer...7th grade, are you kidding me? You must have been the kid EVERYONE picked on? Boo Hoo....So was I, what happened all those years ago means nothing, all kids are rotten, and their worse today "Columbine" (may not be spelled correctly). Durwin did the best he could with what he had. And he made his life were his family would be proud of him. And they are very proud of him. Do you think your parents would like to hear all the wrong things you did "when your dead"? Especially 20+ years ago, grow up and stop whining. He would help anyone in need, he helped poor people fix and rebuild their homes, helped them out with food & clothing. And the mans name is "GOD", and he does forgives all. And were Durwins concerned "That's all that counts".
- DerwinIt strikes me as I am thinking about this that maybe I should have given this guy another chance. Tried to take his bullying and turn it around and try to be his friend. Mrs. Helms, Mrs. Dean... Derwin picked a fight with me in 7th grade because his friend told him to. He was a bully then, but maybe he changed over the years and became the good man that you knew. Therefore, rather than telling us what POS's we are because we are speaking about him without knowing anything about him, why don't you tell us of something good that he did for the world or even an individual. Anything that you can think of that he did in the 25 or so years since that incident. I need something better than ... well, his mama loved him. ... or gawd is gonna strike you down for sayin them mean things bout Derwin. I'm serious. I want you to take my bad experience with him and make me believe that he was a good person. I'm ready to forgive. Help me out here.
- Derwin SchofieldOkay... I went to Junior High and High School with this guy. He was the only person I ever got into a fight with in six years at Stockbridge. He picked a fight with me in seventh grade just because his friend said it would be funny. We pretty much avoided each other for the next six years. Short fight... none of the teachers saw it, but I can say that at that time, I thought he was the most evil and mean spirited kid on the planet. I say this from personal experience. He might have been wonderful to his family, but he certainly didn't win any popularity contests with me. I wouldn't have wished death on him though. Just a shame that someone couldn't have turned his life around before it was too late. RIP
- Durwin SchofieldWell Dave, let me tell you, I've known him since he was 10 years old. He was a good kid, never had any problems or had gotten into any trouble. Not until he met up with a certain girl who'll not be named. Unfortunatley he got mixed up with the wrong people, and he let them influence his life. He may not have lived up to Stockbridge standards but let me tell you, him and his family are the best thing that ever came out of Stockbridge, GA. Durwin would have given the shirt off his back to help anyone. He was the most loving Son a mother could ask for. And if any of you really new him, you'd know that it wasn't him that robbed all those places. All I know is he has a family that loved him and still does, and I can't understand why so many of you have tried to belittle him, when you don't even know him. Ya'll just piss me off with all your ignorance, and your mightier than thou personas. I guess you were all angels and have spouted your wings.....Yea Right!!!!!!
- DerwimIn reply to Ms Helms, I actually knew Derwin Schofield when we were children (Stockbridge HS 86). I have not seen him in 20+ years, but even back then he was really bad news. He was what my grandmother would have just called 'a evil person.' The only thing about this article that surprised me is that he was not either in prison or dead already. I don't know the guy's life for the past 20 years, but back them he was on this same road and anyone who knew him then who was not of the same stupid/evil/criminal mindsetwould be surprised that it took this long for something like this to happen. He was truly a bad apple.
- Derwin SchofieldIt makes me sick reading these comments. Just exactly who are you people and when did you become God. Are you all going to seriously sit there and reflect on your life and it is exactly perfect, you have been the perfect vision of God's wish for His children....Judge not, lest thyself be judged. Derwin was a friend he had problems, he didn't deal with them the right way and his mother is the most wonderful person in the world. His brother and sister loved him deeply. People make mistakes, oh wait those of you on here commenting that it's great he died have NEVER done anything wrong in your lives.....MY BAD!!! God help Derwin's family as they grieve and God help you people because you desperately need His guidance.
- The Mentality of Winder GAY'all never cease to amaze me, you are just as stupid as the junk you write. He wasn't my son, but he was some bodies son. You make me want to puke at your ignorance. If you don't understand the word, look it up. But heck y'all sound so educated you just may figure it out. LOL
- mind ya businessThank you Mrs.Helms..none of you know anything about him..His family loves him very much.get a life
- mind your businesshe was not a criminal at all..people need to know a person before they open their mouth about something they know nothing about..he was a great person just having a very bad time..he has a family that loves him very much..they are the only one that should say anything about him..Thank you Mrs..Helms..he has family that is hurting..so all of u that is in something u know nothing about can go to hell...we love him
- Death of robberIt's people like 'Mrs. Helms' that enable these scumbags. Maybe it was her son. Go figure.
- Excellent. No more tax dollars to keep this POS alive
- Poor JudgementEver stop to think that there are good people that do stupid things out of desperation? Since when is the death of any one right? Don't you animals out there realize this kid had a Mother? No she didn't need her kid stealing....But really... Death? Maybe if it was one of your kids and you heard everyone saying horrable things about your kid, just how frigin happy would you be? Y'all live in this Bible Belt...Please there's not one of you "christians" worth a damn. I'm sure God is so proud of you!! And his name was Derwin Schofield, at least spell his name correctly, he was a Son, a Brother, an Uncle, and a Friend, maybe he did something stupid, but he didn't deserve to die. The old saying comes to mind "ye who cast that first stone in the glass house". I'm sure Y'all are just as pure as the driven snow. There's more I'd like to say, but y'all aint worth it, you wouldn't have an understanding bone in your bodies.
