(WSB Radio)  Nearly 200 DeKalb County school employees will be boarding flights to Los Angeles this week to attend an education conference that will cost taxpayers nearly $400,000.

Channel 2 Action News learned of the training trip this week.

The money isn't coming from local tax dollars but from federal dollars that came to the county as part of the Obama administration's 2009 stimulus package.

Stimulus money from Washington is often discussed in terms of "shovel ready," designated for construction projects that are supposed to create jobs for unemployed Americans.

But the DeKalb County School System has decided to use stimulus money to attend a four-day conference sponsored by America's Choice, which a schools spokesman calls "a great thing."

The organization's Web site describes it as a "solution provider," that offers "comprehensive, proven solutions to the complex problems educators face in an era of accountability." The Web site also says America's Choice has "an unparalleled history as a national thought leader."

School spokesman Dale Davis told Channel 2 Action News investigative reporter Richard Belcher that 184 principals, instructional coaches, district staff and teachers are scheduled to attend the conference in Hollywood. We found that the primary conference hotel is the Renaissance Hollywood Hotel and Spa.

Davis said the school system will spend $91,500 for conference registrations and another $291,400 for hotels, flights, meals and incidentals. That's a total of $382,900 in federal tax money. In an email, Davis wrote, "I am happy that you are expressing interesting in this training opportunity for our employees. We are focused on student improvement. America's Choice is in partnership with the district to help improve the academic success in 40 of our lowest performing schools."

DeKalb's Board of Education recently touched off angry public protests by teachers when it awarded a new contract with a $15,000 raise to Superintendent Dr. Crawford Lewis. The board has defended the raise, even though it came at a time when the system is facing severe budget problems. Lewis is not attending the America's Choice conference.

What others are saying

  • Progressive Movement Indoctrination
Was this trip to Cali another teachers learning how better to indoctrinate our school children??
  • Stimulus money went to Hollywood
Oh but it will be alright by Obama, it was for a "good reason", preparing teachers to teach his new way...still they could have been more conservative with the money!http://strengthfromtears.blogspot.com/
  • What the heck
Ok, DeKalb County sends teachers from 200 schools to go to seminars in California, while my roommate who works in the Fulton County school system has to take 3 more unpaid furlow days this year so that they can make their budget? Something stinks here.
  • Another Waste
What's a bigger waste of money is the required annual teacher conferences. Registration fees, travel reimbursements, etc. far exceed this fiasco. And this happens every year! Cut the conferences and save millions.
  • trip to Hollywood
this is the kind of abuse of funds that needs to be reported to the Obama White House. $400,000 could go a long way towards hiring more teachers, tutoring for ESOL, repairing schools in bad physical condition, direct work with students. The County Commissioners and Board of Education for the county should investigate, censure and fire those responsible for making this decision. I have never heard of any kind of conference making this kind of impact on students' lives.
  • Federal Stimulus Money
Is this some of the "lost" stimulus money?
These people have jobs already. $400K could have provided 4-6 jobs locally for a year.
$400K could have given 3-5 poor families a home.
$400K could have fed a lot of homeless and stocked a few foodbanks.
But no... In Dekalb County Georgia, where the arrogant and well fed county school employees live, you got a freee California vacation.
I do hope those peanuts and beer and cookies in the little fridge bar in the rooms gave them a yearlong pleasing glow.
Perhaps the Superintendent there will be FORTHCOMING with the list of attendees so we can congratulate them on the fine vacation they had while others can just sit down and be quiet.
Is THIS an example of how leadership goes around here?
  • Another Reason
This is just another reason why I make the sacrafices I do to make sure my children will never have to attend Public (government ran) school. With a little digging, it will be found that this is just the tip of the iceberg in the Dekalb County Govenrment ran school system.
  • America's Choice is a joke!
They had America's Choice at my school when I first started teaching, and I refused to use it because it was so boring. The other teaches at my school hated it too. They expected me to teach my kindergartn class using a program that's supposedly "effective" for middle schools. Fortunately, the school abandoned the the program. Now I see the that the county thinks this program will magically raise test scores. I feel sorry for the taxpayers and the 40 schools that are about to implement that mess!
  • Damnation of DeKalb for Misappropriation
Just dam. Anybody still willing to live in DeKalb County and pay taxes needs to have their heads and hearts examined. And I guess California needs the federal stimulus money more than Georgia (right!).....at least the trip is not in Illinois! Just damnation.
  • Last time I checked local people pay federal taxes as well. Or....I've been getting screwed my whole life.
  • Obama's Payback to the Teacher's Union
No need to get upset, he is indebted to the teacher's union and a little 'government cheese' from the stimulus will go a long way in keeping his support base satisfied.

    The hell with the children!
  • Trip to Calif for teacher training
This is insane. All Georgia citizens should call and email Dekalb county school district today and voice your strong opinion on this waste of our tax payer dollars from the federal stimulus I.e., $400K. Like others have posted why can't they do a webx like a lot of private businesses due today to reduce costs. Typical government waste at all levels city, county, state & Federal not only in Georgia but across the U.S.
    This needs to STOP
  • DeKalb defends teacher training
They don't need trip to CA when some common sense will answer all of the issues that is going to be addressed at this convention. A "national thought leader" is another smoke screen term for disguising their saying of a lot of nothing. Pay the superintendent another bonus and he will get another retreat for next year to learn some more solutions in a era of accountability. This trip is a joke. To learn solutions in an era of accountability. Obviously Dekalb County feels no sense of accountability.
  • Teacher Holiday
This is a wise expenditure during this economic crises and layoffs. How may jobs could the school system save instead of this boondoggle. This is your government as usual, isolated from reality and the people they serve! Common sense would dictate better stewardship of the peoples money!
  • California Trip - REALLY!!!
Have you fools ever heard of video conferencing. Your schools are going to hell in a handbasket, your teachers don't get a raise and your idiotic Superintendent got a raise. Wow!!!! Seriously!
  • Response to Dustin --
Just remember that Obama promised he was going to do a bit of redistribution of wealth. Guess we now know what he meant!

(Wonder how many 'Teacher Association' leaders went on this freeloading junket?)
  • Superintendents Incapable of Managing and Leading??
How can 'good' educators have any credibility when they are asking for more tax money when this sort of corruption is permitted --- UNDER THE GUISE OF OBAMA'S STIMULUS! Just think how many CERTIFIED TEACHERS could have been hired with this money; the number of laptops purchased for DeKalb kids; and the number of fewer furlough days applied!!

HOLLYWOOD?? GIVE ME A BREAK. And to think, the erstwhile school board gave this superintendent a $15,000 salary increase!! THEY SHOULD ALL BE RECLLED -- NOW!
  • School arrogance
Simply criminal waste of money; recall the school board, fire the superintendent.
  • This is nothing more than a four day get away so they need not insult the intelligence of the public.
  • Our tax dollars...
I work my tail off, to have my income taken from me, and to give another a vacation! I'm very tempted to quit paying my taxes because this is insane! Where is the government now??? They pitch a fit about PRIVATE companies giving bonuses, but when its the public sector wasting money... THATS OK... this is a blow in my book for public education. It was bad to begin with, now its just corrupt.
  • Trip
Just another reason to be proud I voted for John McCain. How do all you leftists sleep at night?
  • Stimulus Money
I'd be willing to bet that these 184 jobs will be included in the count of jobs saved or created by Prezbo's stimulus. Without the stimulus money would these 184 educators have been laid off? Seems to me that the funds were misappropriated...
  • a Slap in the Face
This boondoggle is a slap in the face to every taxpayer in America. The "free" money from the Obama administration that pays for this little vacation trip will come from the paychecks of hard working people. The hard working people are outraged to see their money spent this way.

And the politicians and the beaureacrats and the school administrators simply do not care. They can always get more money and there's not one damn thing taxpayers can do about it. Or is there?
  • Dekalb County, Are you surprised.
What do you expect from Dekalb Co. They have no idea how to budget for the future, They just know how to snatch and grab the money for their own benefits from the "Government Breast"!!
Those lazy teacher wont learn anything, instead they will complain about what else they were not given for free as they cruise down the FREE buffet line, shoveling food into their purses!
I went to Dekalb County schools, the teachers are the dumbest and laziest I have ever experienced.
  • waste of money
The money is coming from my federal tax dollars. The only stimulus here is a free trip to California. While these people are gone, who is paying for their replacements? I bet it is local tax dollars. The entire DeKalb school board and school administration should be replaced with people who understand fiscal responsibility.
  • $400,000
It seems the same thing could be learned through a video conference or have the event taped and sent to Dekalb.A true waste of money.
  • Ridiculous
So, when AIG had a conference to generate business and profit, they are vilified - but when public schools use tax dollars for a (let's face it, it's a) junket to a 4-star hotel in Hollywood, nary a peep?!? GIVE me a break - so it makes it better that it's FEDERAL money? Last I checked, that's still OUR money, regardless! Can't you get the about same benefit by tele/video conference? This stinks like the climate conference that we spent millions on - shuttling congress members AND families AND dignitaries for no return on investment...
