OPENING NIGHT!
RACHMANINOV: Piano Concerto No. 3
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique”
Robert Spano, conductor
Garrick Ohlsson, piano
September 24/26, 8:00pm
September 27, 3:00pm

Russian passion and the ardent duo of Maestro Spano and Mr. Ohlsson create a sensational 65th season opener. The “Pathétique” was Tchaikovsky’s last and greatest symphony, and the “Rach Three” – Rachmaninov’s best-loved concerto, composed for an American tour – made headlines at its premiere and again in 1996 when featured in the Oscar-winning film Shine.

Croatian-born Dejan Lazic (“a brilliant pianist and a gifted musician full of ideas” – Gramophone) brings his world premiere of the Brahms Violin Concerto, transcribed for piano soloist. A favorite orchestral showpiece, Pictures at an Exhibition is filled with colorful tone paintings from its ambling “Promenade” to its massive finale, “The Great Gate of Kiev.”

October 15/16, 8:00pm

The world’s foremost cellist returns to Symphony Hall to premiere a concerto written especially for him by a swiftly rising Hong Kong-born composer. Stravinsky’s glittering opera The Nightingale tells the story of the Emperor and the Nightingale in a fairytale Chinese setting. Our semi-staged production features principal singers from last year’s Doctor Atomic, among others, in a preview of the concert the ASO will take to Carnegie Hall in November.

KORNGOLD: Violin Concerto
R. Strauss: Also sprach Zarathustra
Weber: Overture to Oberan
Donald Runnicles, conductor
James Ehnes, violin
October 22/23/24, 8:00pm

Weber’s opera tells the further adventures of the fairy king Oberon, known to us from A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Canadian violinist James Ehnes brings his Grammy Award-winning rendition of a lush concerto filled with melodies from Korngold’s 1940’s movie scores, including Juarez and Anthony Adverse. Strauss’s allegorical tale of spreading enlightenment begins with an orchestral “Sunrise,” familiar as the ironic fanfare from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.

HALLOWEEN MAGICAL MUSICAL TOYBOX
Jere Flint, conductor
Lee Harper & Dancers
October 25, 1:30 & 3:30pm

The ASO’s annual fright-fest is a howl for the kids and always plays to a packed house. This season will be no different, with mischievous music, the annual kids’ vote for spookiest costumed musician, and haunting dance. Oh, the horror!

BRAHMS: A German Requiem
Haydn: Symphony No. 44, “Trauer”
Donald Runnicles, conductor
Chen Reiss, soprano
Matthew Worth, baritone
ASO Chorus
October 29/30, 8:00pm

Haydn’s somber “Trauersymphonie,” so called because he requested that its slow movement be played at his funeral, makes a dignified companion for the welcome return of Brahms’s beloved German Requiem, featuring the supple power of the justly honored ASO Chorus.
