Newnan Police Chief Douglas Meadows tells WSB's Jeff Dantre that around 9:55 Friday morning his officers responded to an attempted carjacking at the store.

"When we got on the scene we discovered that a man brandishing a pistol had assaulted a 72-year-old female as she was getting into her car after she had been shopping at the Wal-Mart store. Apparently he was trying to take her car and her pocketbook. There were some witnesses who saw what was going on. The suspect saw the witnesses looking at him. When the witnesses tried to call 911 he saw them on the cell phone. The suspect flashed his pistol at the witnesses as kind of a sign for them to back off."
The suspect left the victim's car and got into a silver colored Chrysler and drove off on Bullsboro Drive.
Newnan police officers used Wal-Mart surveillance video to obtain a description of the car plus a tag number.
Meadows says, "The tag was an Alabama tag and was registered to a Courtney Lockhart of Lee County, Alabama. Newnan Police contacted the Lee County Sheriff's Office in an effort to locate Lockhart."

Shortly after Newnan Police issued a lookout for the car, they got a call from Phoenix City police who were looking for Lockhart in connection with a robbery there. They had apprehended Lockhart who was also accused of robbing a Wal-Mart in Columbus.
Meadows says Lockhart has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault and kidnapping in connection with the Newnan incident.
