(WSB Radio) -- The umpire who was hit during a championship baseball game in Stephens County is cautiously reacting to the incident. David Scott told Channel Two Action News, "It came as a surprise, disbelief more than anything. I'd say the video pretty much speaks for itself. Other than that, I really don't have anything to say about it. I'm currently under a doctor's care and still waiting for all the results to be evaluated."
Scott's attorney says they're waiting for that medical evaluation to determine if they will take any legal action.
Earlier this week, the Georgia High School Association levied a $1,000 fine against the Stephens County high school and put the school's athletics program on severe warning status.
Stephens County Principal David Friend called the punishment "fair" and said he was very disappointed in his players behavior in the championship game.
The catcher in the incident, Matt Hill, had been invited to walk on for the Gordon College baseball team. The coach of that team has since rescinded the offer.
What others are saying
- Should have ejected the catcher, pitcher and coachI'm surprised the Umpire didn't eject the sham of a mockery of a sham that was the catcher. Pitcher and coach too. Those that say it hit the batter are blind as bats and probably spend a great deal of time squinting, evewn when the sun's not out. :o)
- The Real Issue Here!!!Wow, I can't believe the shallowness of many of the opinions given here. Let us not forget the primary aim of Little League International, (the largest youth sports organization in the world)other than simply to have fun, is to teach children about teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play. Their watchwords are Character, Courage, Loyalty. No wonder this Country is going to hell in a hand basket! Teach your kids some respect!!!
- Umpire's gear...OK, sorry, but I have to respond to the many posts asking "Where's the umpire's chest protector (CP)?" or "Where's the rest of his gear?", etc. C'mon folks, look very closely; the ump's CP is under his shirt (you can see the outline of the bottom of it a couple of inches above his belt. Also, you can see the kneecap of his left leg guard pressing against his slacks... Hey, he's wearing the three pices of plate gear all MLB umpire wears: namely, a chest protector, a pair of leg guards and a mask.
- Agree with umpire Wayne...I umpire youth league to men's
semi-professional baseball and agree with "Wayne" (see post Cowardly Catcher) who stated that this was an intentional act by a cowardly pitcher and catcher; was intentional, and has no place in baseball. Yes, umpires wear equipment but the equipment is not "bulletproof" and it's worn to protect against things that happen as UNINTENTIONAL consequences of the game, not so whiny ball players can take cheap shots to intentionally hurt someone. And for those that think it hit the batter first, watch the batter's reaction - he puts his hand out to hold the runner up at third base. If the batter were hit, he would instead have been pleading his case to the umpire. He doesn't react like the ball hit him. - Hitting an umpire andIntentionally throwing at an umpire is NOT part of the game. Even if he were so called "inconsistent", that's not a license to throw at an umpire. Besides, umpiring is not an exact science; fair/foul, safe/out, ball/strike - it's based mostly on judgment. This guy could have been seriously injured. I umpire and took a hard foul ball square on the mask that caused temporary paralysis on the left side of my face.
Also, if "beanballs" were just part of the game then there would not be a rule about players being ejected. This is a stupid and childish "player's code" (i.e., you hit one of ours, we're going to hit one of yours) It's one of the things wrong with baseball and it jeopardizes players' careers and lives. - This was intentionalBesides the obvious by looking at the video, it was intentional, I was at the game. Everyone in the stands thought it was intentional. Two major factors that people fail to list, the first you had to be there for. The ump was very inconsistant with his strike zone and two the team that did it was fustrated. Stephens County was favored to win, they were losing 13-1 when this happened.
- Just part of the gameThis is one of the oldest tricks in the book. I've seen it done in the major leagues. When an ump takes it upon himself to hose a team, the players know it, and this is how it gets dealt with. It's the same thing as beaning a dirty player. And everyone knows beanballs are a legitimate part of the game.
- Some comments are stupidPeople who are making cheap excuses for the catcher don't know baseball. You call for a low curve ball with a man on second with an ump who has a tight strike zone? And you set up the pitcher that high?I used to pitch and catch part time. You don't set up high for a low curve and you don't call for a slow, low breaking ball with a man on second. It was a foolish act of a foolish kid. Can't be sure about the pitcher.Looks like he was trying to hit the target.
- fair playremove these people from the game
- Catcher/Pitcher caused thisTo all you morons who think this was caused by a ball hitting the batter first. Look at what the catcher does prior to the pitch just arriving. Truly the catcher and Pitcher planned this. The catcher pulled his glove down just before it arrived.
- Idiots?Hey Reason, if the batter got hit by the pitch why does he not react. He immediately gives a wave to the runner at second base to move up a base when the ball gets away from the catcher. Don't you think he would make some sort of movement toward first base after being hit? You are the one that needs to get a clue, idiot! There is no question the catcher intentionally missed the pitch to try and injure the umpire. And a comment to Richard, what are the consequences to players for performing poorly? We can accept the human errors of players in ball games, however, when you think an official makes a bad call (who's to say it was a bad call) they need some sort of suspension. Officials and umpires are out there to get all the calls correct, but sometimes they make mistakes. Just like the players...you need to ask Reason for his clue once he's done.
- Ball hit batter? No way did the ball hit the batter....the camera angle may give that illusion but absolutely no way....if that ball was at the hitter head he sure wouldn't be standing up.....ball wasn't close to his head it is the severe camera angle....have a little bit of common sense...must do a little bit better selling it....that guys breaking ball isn't good.....head high to gotta block a CB in the dirt.....just a horrible sell job by the catcher....
- Watch it in Slow Motion!Yes it was intentional but for who? has the batter made any comments? In slow motion the ball hits the batters helmet first, then deflects to the umps face mask. I think it's a beanball with a lucky bounce. the ball clearly deflects down after it hits the batter!!
- BaseballI would like to know if you have the same point of view for pitchers that through at hitters.
In addition, what are the consequences for the umpire who was performing so badly? - AccidentI can't believe all these idiots can't see the ball hit the batter. 'Take a closer look before you ruin someone's life.
- Ump Deliberately hitLook to these brats father. Ihave been to summer games where the pitcher's father is in the stands. Apple hasn't fallen far from the trr. Yes it was deliberate and take your punishment little boy. Also be aware that all umpires know who you are now. I bet that you will have a very narrow strike zone. We'll see a lot of crying from you and a lot of hissy fits from your father.
- Ump Hit by BallTo you people that are saying the catcher did not know where the ball was, you are so full of it!! The catcher took a dive to let the ump get hit by the pitch. Good for Gordon College. He made a poor choice of judgement. Punishment well deserved. And to the a$$ that said it is part of the game - not at any baseball game I've ever been in attendance.
- Ump BaseballThe first time I watched the video I only followed the catcher and I thought to myself "That was flagrant." The second time I watched the video I followed only the ball and realized that it did hit the batter on the helmet first and then the catcher reacted. This video reminds me of that young girl old woman optical illusion.
- Intentional? This is only a short clip highlighting one pitch. Had the pitcher thrown any previous wild pitches? The catcher may have thought he did not know where the ball was going and with the glove held up may have actually been protecting the ump! To me, this is akin to listening to a short sound bite and making a hasty judgement.
- baseballThe kid should be made to umpire little all summer without pay.
- Call it like it isAfter a frame by frame analysis, there is no question of intention. At 0:14 seconds into the film, the catcher's knees are dropping while his face and glove hand remains in the strike zone. The ball is appx' 5 1/2 feet in the air and appx. 15 ft. in front of batter. The next 5 frames show catcher completely on knees with glove still in strike zone with head starting to move downward. Ball appears to glance slightly off of batter's helmet a full three feet above catcher who is now in a full blocking position with head and glove totally down with no visual acknowledgement of ball positioning at all. This kid's lower body half was dropping with ball well high and in front of the plate no question about it. The sun is also to the catcher,s back. I was also at the game and saw it live. As for the pro's hitting umps, there would be a heafty fine, game suspensions and possible banishment from baseball according to league rules for something as flagrant. One may have bias to this incident but please call it like it is. These guys need to learn right from wrong but please no jail time!
- SadIt's terribly sad that so many people today scream about Liberal forgiveness and open mindedness, then go on a lynch mob to
call for this boys life to be left in ruins. This was a nothing more than a bad decision and yes a reprimand for it is in order. But ending this talented young mans's baseball career? Let's just delv into anyone's past and let's se what error in judgement they made in their live and see if we can ruin their future for making a MISTAKE!!! Get over it people. How about we all get more concerned with our own lives rather than sticking our big fat noses in everyone else's?
Search not for the speck in another's eye, until you have removed the board from your own. - YES INTENTIONALNo question, it was intentional. Umpire called brother out on strikes just prior to that. Fine should have been higher, sue 'em. Bring legal action, something has got to stop this kind of crap in high school sports. Not only was this intentional, take a look at all those Stephens Co fans clapping and blowing their horns in support. How pathetic. What a bunch of rednecks.
- If the ball hit the batter why didn't he head to first base instead of just standing there. He also put out his hand to tell the runner on second to stop.
- YoursIt's part of the job. Who cares?
- The ball richochets off the hitter's helmet. Maybe the catcher should have still tried to catch it, but he had no idea which way to go to do that. It cannot be intentional because he could have no idea the ump would be hit.
- poor actinI can't believe anyone defending this catcher because he thought the ball hit the batter. He started to kneel down way BEFORE the ball was near the home plate. In addition, after the ball hit the umpire, the catcher jumped up and chased the ball. It's either he doesn't know the rule of baseball or he knew that the ball was alive because it did NOT hit the batter.
- IntentionalHow many batters have you seen get hit and just stand there telling a runner to hold up. He was not hit by the pitch, it's an optical illusion as he pulls his head back as the ball appears in line with him. This was clearly intentional. Pathetic.
- catcher/umpireslow motion shows clearly that ball hit batter's helmet first, then went on to umpire after catcher 'ducked'. think the catcher just reacted once he knew ball was going 'somewhere' after it hit the batter - give the catcher a break - this WASN'T intentional.
- Team workFirst off gentlemen, the runner advanced which means the ball did not hit the batter!! If it was high and tight, the catcher still should have tried to glove it!! The score was 13-1 which means they didn't care about runners advancing to third!! I was a SEC Championship catcher that knows that the umpire is your best friend. As well as knowing when there has to be team work between the pitcher and the catcher to pull that off!! Sorry gentleman. As the umpire put it, "the video says it all"~
- its hard to tell but...i played catcher for a few years and was a hockey goaltender.. and in both cases i never dropped to my knees unless the ball was in the dirt.. or the puck was coming in low and doing so what the only way to stop the ball/puck. it looks like this guy is dropping to his knees even before the ball hits the batter (if it actually does) which makes it suspicious. maybe that's his normal stance... i can't say from seeing only this video. but at this age and level of play.. you don't duck and cover at a wild pitch.. if you do.. you need to quit baseball and take up golf or sewing or something.
- That ball never comes close to the batter at all. It was purely, and completely an intentional act. This catcher should never be allowed on the field again. If the pitcher knew the catcher wasn't going to attempt to catch it, then the pitcher should never see the field again either.
- hit batter!!!!!It looks like that the ball's direction changes after it hits the batter's helmet. If this was a championship game, no way would the defense risk advancing a runner on second with a intentional wild pitch...I think it was an accident...maybe the umpire has a guilty conscience and is paranoid...
- umpire hitThe hazards of the game. that's why they are supposed to wear protective masks and chest guards. He had on neither one. Tough luck obey the rukes
- hit umpirenot only did the catcher drop to his knees, he dropped his head down to protect his on face
- Cowardly catcherI am a high school umpire and have never seen a catcher drop to the ground like that on a curve ball or on a deflection. It was intentional and has no place in baseball. This umpire was very lucky that the ball hit him in the mask. The ball could just as easily have hit him in the throat. High school umpires barely make enough money to cover expenses, they umpire for love of the game. For all those people posting that the umpire should just get over it or grow a set, you are the same fools who stand behind that safe fence and shout out your insightful comments to the men in blue who are doing a necessary job for the sake of the game. I hope the umpire in question sues the pants off all those involved.
- catcher ducking to let ball hit umpireanyone who thinks that is part of the game should get out of it, coach and catcher should be ejected and suspended
- Hit BatterI must agree with the previous poster, if it was intentional they got lucky. Watch in slow motion and see that the ball hit the batter and ricocheted to the umpire's mask. Fines will be rescinded and the apology should come from the umpire for over blowing the situation.
- Hit By PitchIt's plain that the ball hit the batters helmet FIRST! No harm, no foul. Man you people are vicious!
- Hit By PitchI agree with Danny, 6/6.08 10:58PM, The ball hit the batters helmet first, then richoet into the ump. I agree the catcher looked suspicious as he ducks, but remember who was hit FIRST !
- PachinkoThis is nothing more than baseball pachinko. High surve ball coming in on the batters head, glancing in off his helmet, down to the catcher's mask and back to the umpire. Watch it in slow motion. Watch it again. It's one of those wierd situations where every angle had to be right for the end result to happen. Whether the catcher ducked on purpose is up for debate, but in my opinion it was a reaction because when the ball went into the batter's helmet, you never know where it is going to go after that. You are correct Danny.
- I played catcher and got hit in the mask lots of times. It doesn't hurt.
- old school justicethis has been going on forever the only problem is why do it with men on base?that is stupid because it causes harm to the team.also it is easier to let a ball skip low and hitem in the shins.
- It hit the batters head and then ricocheted. No one's fault except the stupid batter who should have at least had the decency to fall down...come on, you were hit! Go ahead and take your base.
- ball hit empireIt looks like the ball hit the batters head first. it wasn't the catchers falt
- umpire handled it rightI'm an umpire. I've done independent pro league down to high school. The catcher, pitcher and head coach should all have been ejected. The high school organization acted correctly. I don't believe charges should be filed. The catcher should make a public apology.
- Bush LeagueIt was a bush league play that was horribly orchestrated. The catcher did the worst acting job I've ever seen. As for the ump, he should have thrown the kid out immediately. Secondly, If he is such a Puss that he has to run and get an attorney for getting hit by a baseball, he has NO business calling balls and strikes. Stay home! Pathetic by Both parties.
- its a ballare you kidding!, they are standing in the way of a fast moving object and you can plainly see the ball was close to the hitters head, get over it! you got hit, wear more gear if you are going to be such a sissy
- OverreactionObviously the guy umpiring a championship game has been around the block. I'd bet he's been hit before. Why is he pissing and moaning this time? Because he got media attention.
This is a big deal about nothing. Maybe the catcher did it on purpose, maybe not. No way to know. Kick him out of the game, sure. File criminal charges...waste of the taxpayers' money.
Reminder: IT'S A GAME. JUST BASEBALL, FOLKS. - Quick! Call a Wahmbulance!Ya know, umps enter the game with protective equipment as a just in case, seems to me they enter at their own risk just like any player. And this article says NOTHING coming from the catcher...who knows if he lost the ball in the sun or something. Hard to tell from the video, it does look a tad suspicious but only a tad at best. Who is this ump thinking he's gonna sue??
- deadly weapon? So a baseball is a deadly weapon? I hope homeland security doesn't find out or we will have to give up our balls and our toothpaste when we go through airport security. Oh, dammm, we already do.
- Bad PitchWhere is the umpire's vest?
- Its a game!!I can remember more then once when my pitcher and I set up stuff like this. If the ump is calling a bad game and you say something, you'll get kicked. So you skip the talking and just let the ball hit him a few times then get tossed. What really needs to be asked is ::: Are the kids going to make this a habit? If so, punishment maybe, if its a one time deal, go bother yourself with the dieing kids in africa and let them play ball.
- Ump hitAnyone who thinks this was accidental or it's "part of the game" is an idiot!
Yes, they wear gear for protection, but they don't have a glove and are not expecting to get hung out to dry.
I would have dumped the catcher for sure, and anyone who defended him. Then filed criminal charges. There are better ways to get your point accross then trying to hurt someone intentionally. Remember, these guys have regular jobs and families to support.
There is no place for these kind of actions in HS baseball, or at any level for that matter. Even pro. It is as someone said before "bush league". - CatcherLooks like the catcher was expecting a high fast ball, you can see him start to stand up a little from his crouch position when the pitcher is throwing it. After he realizes it is a curve, he probably thought he was going to get hit in the side of the head(because he was crouched a little higher expecting fast ball) and that is why he ducked. Still the catchers fault though. Kind of made himself look like a wus.
- i know whythis ump was clearly driving an SUV, voting republican and hating all that is "green" in our environment. He also makes a lot of money so it is his fault.
- too close to callBased on this video, I can't tell anyone's intent. Clearly the catcher ducked. Clearly the umpire got beaned.
- take action nowI hate to say it but I did the same thing years ago in a high school game and guess what, me and my catcher were tossed no questions asked. Plus the ump told me he would kick my ass the next time I tried something stupid like that. those were the days when umps had balls and didn't have to worry about a drunken parent or other crazed legal F*** repremaninding them. Ump the game like you should, toss the BAS***s and play ball.
- Nicely DoneNice everyone is overreacting in no way should this kid lose his baseball scholarship to college! There are 2 sad truths here: 1) Unfortunately this sort of thing happens a lot........maybe not so obvious but still happens, and 2) the Ump probably deserved it! hahaha Play Ball
- ohh that poor poor umpireWhile I never pulled anything like this; I agree it's part of the game. If an umpire doesn't want to risk getting hit by a baseball...he should find another job. Greg Maddox is one of the most respected baseball players ever and is famous for intentionally hitting people. Ump needs to grow a pair and maybe call a better game. Definate increase in the woosification of America...
- UMPO HIIts so obvious that both the catcher and the pitcher should have been suspended from school and arrested for assault.
- Hit by a pitchwaaa...waaa...How many umps have "leaned in" too far and gotten smacked with a swung bat? Did the batter hit him "on purpose"? Baseball is a "contact sport". That's why they wear safety equipment for crying out loud!
- Dumb CatcherMy 7 year old daughter could have pulled off a better acting job than that!!!!!
- CatcherOne word, Bushleague! The umpire should have thrown the catcher out of the game. That said, since when do we need lawyers to police a ball game?
- catcherwhat is bad that is not the first time that has happened, it bad the way the catcher did the play. dont ever take your glove hand down like that just dont raise it up high enough.
- Not the first timeBaseball teams have been doing this since the game started. And do you know why they do this, boys and girls? It's because the team feels like the umpire has been making bad calls, and they have been arguing with the umpire all game to no avail. Usually they kick out the manager and the catcher for this stunt. This isn't the first time this has happened, nor will it be the last. I'm not justifying it, but it wasn't that bad. The pitcher didn't throw it as hard as he could have. If anything, it hurt the team because the guy on second base made it to third.
- hit by pitchcatchers fault
- Umpire hit by pitchThis is clearly due to global warming... and if it wasn't for the Bush Administration I am sure this would have never happened.
- Hit By PitchThe catcher and pitcher should not be allowed to play baseball at least through college. (If they go to college)
- Purpose or not.It looks like it's on purpose. But the ball was high and the sun was almost straight up (look at shadow on 3rd). Usually a catcher just barely moves his glove down to let the ball go by when he wants to hit the ump. The ump says "I hear ya, don't let it happen again". And they move on. This guy took a defensive position. Maybe he was blinded by the sun and ducked. Can't say for sure. But whichever it was, it did not look good.
- Can you say suspensionThis kid should ride the pine for awhile.
- Looked to meLike the catcher thought the batter was going to swing at the breaking ball and didn't want to get hit with the bat. I've been hit by the batter more than once while catching, which is no fun at all. No harm, no foul
- Umpire and catcherBeing a catcher all through high school, college, and AA ball, it looks to me like it was not an intentional pass. The way the catcher dropped, it looks to me like he was expecting a curve that should have dropped instead of being hung, or possibly a mixed signal. If youa re looking for a low and outside fastball and the pitcher throws a curve that hangs you are going to be in the wrong position. The catcher tried to catch the pitch by flinging up his glove at the last minute. There was a runner on second and no player would get back at an umpire by allowing a potential run get to third. Poor technique, maybe, mixed signal, maybe, intentional, no.
- Bad manners/sportsmanshipWithout all the data of previous innings/events, it still looks intentional...as a little league ball player for many years, at all positions of the field including catching and pitching, yes, KIDS DO have that kind of ACCURACY and SPEED!
My old pitcher, who consistently threw above 90 MPH and went on to play with Cincinatti...had an ego like you wouldn't believe.
Bruised feelings, a "good working catcher/pitcher combo", and poor morals will yield just this kind of thing...
Ejection/Blackball? Yes, for both pitch and catch, and fire the coach for not teaching better sportsmanship. Lost "walk on"? Catcher deserves to loose it...Pitcher? Insufficient evidence, but I still say it was a "team effort"...what you do to one, do to the other, up to and including legal charges.
Catchers glove is backwards when he drops...held it up high long enough to give the pitcher the target, (for this the pitch may not be guilty...his job it to "hit the Glove of the Catcher")...and then the glove goes right at the time of release, into an "I'm not catching that one" position.
Definitely deliberate. - Bad PitchYes we can all throw the rocks. Bur the case point is he (the catcher) made a bad decision that he'll pay the price for. Should be ejection from the game, kicked off the team by the coach, and his high school attendence revoked until mommy and daddy repay the fine and the ump's medical costs. Pretty simple restitution.
- Lucky KidsThe pitcher and catcher are lucky they aren't my sons. First we'd talk about sportsmanship, class, and losing with dignity. Then we'd start the punishment phase.
- Assumed risk is one thing but . . .intentionally trying to hurt someone is another thing. What the umpire should have been able to do was beat the living crap out of both of them. Considering he cannot do that w/o going to jail, what other choice does he have? You can't just let people get away with it. When that kid has to cough up $5000, everyone will think twice before doing this again.
- ump hit by pitchyeah, he ducked.
- Why'd he make it so obvious?I don't get it. If they were looking to ring the umpire's bell, why did the catcher make it look so obvious? There are lots of passed balls that just barely miss the catcher's mitt. Why did he dive? If it was intentional, that pitcher has great control, though!
- Umpire hbpThis is what's wrong with America. Catcher and pitcher conspire to bean the umpire. It's been going on since Doubleday. Umpire can (and should) toss the catcher, but litigation and pecuniary fines are part of the wimpification of America. Take the hit, yell at the coach, toss the kid, get on with the game.
- hit with pitchSo if a pitcher hits the batter who has only a helmet that covers part of his head.. he should go straight to jail. Yeah right, come on people, wake up, they wear the mask for things like this, its all part of the game. When you take the job, you take the risks.
- UmpireI was an Umpire and had the same thing happen to me. I called the game because of darkness and delayed the game until they offending team could replace the catcher with some one who could see. If they didnot replace the catcher, I was going to call every pitch a ball until I could see. This would mean a lot of walks before the end of the game.
- Things that make you go hmmm...Looks intentional but I can't be certain. Maybe there's a reason this kid was having to walk on the team since he doesn't catch?!. But why fine the school? The player is the one responsible (at least that's what it looks like) and it sounds as though the school is taking the proper action. It's sad that there isn't more respect for the umpires. Sure we can disagree with calls but human error is part of the game.
- Thought policeI am so pleased that the psychics can know that the ball was intended to harm the ump. Perhaps we should prosecute every player who pitches and hits anyone. If hits the catcher - maybe they were having a squabble over a relationship. If a ball hits the batter then obviously it must be intentional. Yes the uimp got hit and yes it might or might not have been intentional. Umps get hit frequently - he assumed the risk of being hit - maybe even by accident. If his mommy won't protect him he must go to the courts. Besides, he got hurt - waaaahhhhhhhhh!
- That a boy....I have watched the video many times and agree that it looks intentional. However, I do not see what the fuss is about. I do not think there were intent to injury the umpire. He finished calling the game for crying out loud. I think his neck started to hurt after the lawyer called and wanted to represent him.
- That's why umps where a maskHaving been both a catcher and a pitcher, then an umpire through NCAA level for many years, it's obvious this was deliberate on the part of the catcher. So what? Mr. Umpire have some balls and just do your job. Toss the catcher. Toss anyone who frowns at you. Create the smallest strike zone that pitcher has ever seen. Umps are part of the game too and catchers should know that. Mistreat your ump or hang him out to dry (intentionally or unintentionally never really mattered to me) and all things being equal your team is probably going to lose.
- People that see no harm done in this incident are part of the problem. We should teach our children this behavior is wrong not condon it. This catcher should be suspended from the school team and pay any medical bills caused to the umpire. Yes, the umpire wears equipment because he could get hit by a ball but that is when it is an accident. This is a case of a planned assault and there is no room for this behavior in sports.
- Catcher's IntentBet that kid is one of the thousands who is attending summer school in Georgia. Not real bright. Not withstanding what he might have scored on an SAT or ACT, bet a college that sees this will say, "NO THANKS".
- Mixed signals my .......Any one with half a brain could see that the catcher ducked on purpose. Any player that intentionally wants to cause injury to another person should be locked up.
- Catchers intent ?You know...looking at the video half a dozen times or so, I'm confused about all the fuss. Neal talked about all the Pro's commenting, call in comments to the show, etc. Unless I haven't heard/seen all the info., or a confession by the catcher in question, I'm trying to fiquire out how many mindreaders out there can convince me of any intent to harm or miss, etc. I mean...how can we really know what happened and why. Anytime you ask a pointed question about a subjective occurance, you're going to get a comment that is slanted/questionable, based on the respondents attitude(s). This video shows an action, open to interpretation by everyone who wants to give his/her opinion... or agenda.
- Ok , CrybabiesThe cry babies are the players, coaches and fans who complain about every pitch, out or safe call, balk. Work on coaching and learning how to play the game instead of complaining about everything. You want old school baseball, the umps can play that game too.
- dumb kidyep it certainly was on purpose, probably the catcher and pitcher talked about it before. kids do stupid things without thinking of the consequences. Consequences should be imposed. severe enough to assure they won't do something like this again, BUT don't make it a "death penalty." I would think imposing about 200 hours of community service (and real community service) over the summer and a public apology to the ump and to the teams on both sides should suffice. Maybe a public flogging. I have 4 kids myself - sometimes they are stuupid.
- CrybabiesGreat! If you can't play with the big boys then get the hell off the field. That ump is probably a power-hungry know-it-all smartass, always wanting to sue someone when he encounters any problem in society. I'd like to hear from the pansies who call baseball a "children's game". Does anyone know how I can save this video-clip so I can watch it every morning and SMILE! I wish they would hit the umps more in professional sports. I LOVE old school baseball. Brings back great memories of Tyrus Raymond Cobb, The Georgia Peach! ---Joey
- Umpire Hit by PitchI played baseball for about 17 years. The catcher dropped to his knees and moved away from the ball. It was done with a purpose.
- AccuracyIf he puts that kind of effort in his pitching accuracy, then he does'nt have to take his frustrations out on the ump. Very dangerous thing to do. Throw the bums out!
- CatcherChin music is no big secret to the game.Going into second with your cleats up is no big secret to the game. Even hitting the ump on purpose is no big secret. Everyone at some time or other disagrees with a particular call.Sling your bat on contact. That will send a signal.Good sportsmanship is a learned trait.
- Happens more than you think! This hapened to me during my umpiring career. The pitcher took too many warmup throws, so I started calling balls. When the batter stepped up, the count was already 2-0. The cather dropped his glove and the ball hit me right in the chest protector. I ejected the catcher, and warned the pitcher and coach. This happens more than people think.
- Kudos to Gordon CollegeKudos to the Coaches and staff at Gordon College. Sorry that akid loses his opportuity to walk on but every action you take you are responsible for the actions and the results.
- Ump HitFor all the people saying they got there signals crossed, pause the vid at 4 seconds.
I have never been a catcher, but it seems to me that whatever type of pitch the catcher was expecting, the proper way to catch it is not to point the top of your head at the pitcher, look straight down, and have the pocket of your glove also pointing down.
If someone who feels this was an accident could explain this to me, I would appreciate it. - Better off without himLooks intentional to me and extreemly poor choice of timing on his part to pull off a stunt like this. If it wasn't intentional then Gordan College certainly can find a better catcher then this kid from all the leagues around the region.
- He deserves to lose his scholorship because he did such a bad job at covering up his intentions.
If you're going to do something underhanded, at least do it well. - pass ball hit umpwe wonder whats wrong with pro sports?
need i say more - First, where the rest of the umpires gear?
Second, what are face mask for?
Third, he (the umpire) over reacted. Through the catcher out of the game, if he thought the pitcher was involved, throw him out too. End of subject and no further action needed. - Umpire VideoAs a former collegiate and professional catcher I can safely say that this was purposeful. This is one of those little known parts of the game within the game, similar to chin music. Right or wrong is a legitimate topic for debate.
What you don't see is what lead up to this pitch. Was the umpire "squeezing" the pitcher or had there been some sort of exchange between him and the coach? We can't tell from this clip. However, there are still many old school baseball guys out there that are coaching. I'm not a proponent of injuring and, as a catcher who has been hit hundreds of times harder than that, I question the validity of the injury. The unfortunate reality is that officials often carry an air of being beyond reproach and questioning and sometimes this sort of thing happens as a self-policing mechanism.
Have a great weekend everyone. - Looking DownIs the first principle of catching a ball to watch it into your glove?
The catcher is looking down when he goes to his knees. This isn't a mixed signal and I was dropping down to catch a low pitch. If it was he would still have his head up and be looking for the ball.
Just my two cents. - CatcherThe catcher and pitcher planned this. They both should be kicked out.
- Only the reaction is unusualI have seen it myself where a catcher was judged to have intentionally allowed a pitch to pass him and hit the umpire. It has happened in baseball for years, and will doubtless happen again.
The incident I witnessed was handled as nearly all such incidents are. The catcher was ejected from the game, his manager argued the call but failed to get it reversed, and everyone's life continued without further incident.
Unless the player's past history gives reason to believe otherwise, that is the end of it. Which is likely what should have happened here.
The umpire's job is to see that the rules of the game are enforced and honored with a minimum of drama. By threatening legal action, he has pretty much torn that to shreds. - Where's the proof?I don't see enough from this video to say one way or another. It could have been intentional, and the umpire is obviously crying foul, but the pitcher and catcher could also have their signals crossed up. Who knows? Also, I'd like to know what the umpires injuries really were. Could he just be looking to sue someone to make an easy buck at the expense of the school district. The only people who really know are the kids, and unless they have foolishly gone around bragging about it, I don't see how one proves it was intentional. That said, it would not surprise me either way.
- catcherLemme see here, you have a pitcher throwing a small hard ball at near 90MPH to a guy on his knees with a small glove. Then you have a fellow standing behind the catcher waring only a face mask and gets hit in said face mask, which is exactly why they ware them....hummmm ... so what's the problem?
- I have coached baseball for 15 years and was in attendance at the game. This was a flagrant retalliation for a called third strike on the pitcher's brother in the previous inning. The umpire did not call the outside corner for either team. If this is the measure to bean an ump, he wouldn't have made it through the first inning. As for there being no damage done, I personally know an umpire who suffers seizures till this day from a shot to the side of the head. It is the intention not the damage that matters. This was planned before the incident and was indicative of the management of the team. The Stephens County coach allowed no handshakes the previous day as a sign of "low class". If these were my players and if the ump hadn't tossed them I would have.
- CatcherThrow the kid out of the game and continue. Nothing more is called for. This should not have made the news.
- Ump HitCheck out the catcher's stance before the pitch. He isn't squatting low for a low pitch. He is seated very HIGH, expecting a high pitch (also setting the umpire up, making him think he will be protected.)
- deliberate? gee, ya think???It was a cheap shot, period. Stehpens was getting hammered 9-1 when the incident took place, and the Stephens County players had been blowing their cool for a couple of innings. Perhaps the best justice was that Cartersville pounded Stephens 13-1 to take the AAA title.
- The ump is a wuss. Throw the kid out of the game and get on with it. Don't ruin his life for a split second decision he made. He is just a kid. No legal action should be taken in this incident.
- MIX UPobviously the catcher expected a curveball and the pitcher threw a fastball, you can see him drop to his knees and put his hand behind his mitt, so he is obviously trying to block the ball in the dirt. I was a catcher in high school and am an umpire now. Also there are better times to do this is intentional, not with a runner on second in a championship game.
- Come On!I am not a professional baseball player and I don't have to be to see that it was planned. He hits his knees way too early. Stop making excuses for the kid; he made a decision to "show the ump" he didn't like the calls being made in the game and now he will face the consequences of his actions. It is better that the kid learns now that decisions have consequences and hopefully in the future, he will have a better appreciation that every single choice he makes can have lasting actions. I hate the kid lost a free ride to college, but he knew better and decided to do something harmful. If he didn't know better, then the parents who didn't teach him right from wrong and the coach that didn't instill good sportsmanship in his players also carry some fault, but it was the catcher that dropped to his knees. No one put a gun to his head to make him do it. Sucks to be him and his parents that now either have to foot the bill for school or support him slinging fries since no other school will take him.
- umpire hitGordon College did the right thing, makes me proud to be an alumnus of Gordon Military College.
- Ump hitOk we see the video. It does look rather deliberate, but not being there I can't say for sure. What did the players have to say about this. What were the umpires thoughts. The 2nd base ump had a good look what did he say. I need more information before I pass judgement.
- Poor executionThis catcher is an idiot. He would have totally gotten away with it if he had called a pitch out and the pitcher threw a fast ball. Crossed up signals happen, man. I am sorry mister ump. Although wrong the ump took a fastball off the face mask. What kind of medical attention does he really need. A lawsuit perhaps. There is just loads of bs to go around in this situation.
- Catcher ducks/pitcher not at faultThe catcher clearly evaded the pitch with the intention of allowing it to hit the ump.
Unless it can be shown that the pitcher and catcher got together and decided on this particular pitch that the catcher would duck, I would say from viewing the video that the catcher made this decision on his own and that the pitcher was just making a pitch. I can not fault the pitcher in anyway from the basis of this video alone. - It looks practiced, too. . .The catcher's duty is controlling the ball and guarding
home plate, which includes protecting the umpire. This split-second reaction looks practiced and punishment is warranted. - From a player...Most catchers have done this at some point in there careers.
- Too stupid or lazy to make it look less intentionala better effort and he'd have more of a case to weasel out of it...anyone with a brain and one good eye can tell it's intentional.
The real lesson here is to make sure you're good enough in the right sport before you do something like this.
HS Americans can be illiterate, father multiple children with multiple baby mamas and possess a criminal record, but if they can provide victories in football or hoops, they're in.
Walk-on level talent for the likes of Gordon College face a higher standard of acceptable behavior. - Ump HitPlaying Devil's advocated here... There is a runner on second, therefore a series of signs will be given by the catcher, and it is not uncommon for the pitcher and catcher to get crossed up. If you, as a catcher, are expecting a breaking ball in the dirt, with a runner on, you have to drop and block it. The fastball leaves the hand at a height, that if it was the breaking ball that was called, it bounces, therefore, the catcher drops to block what should be a breaker in the dirt, however, its too late.
- beanball on umpThe pitcher and the catcher should be charged with malicious assault with a deadly weapon!
- On purpose, no question. No excuse, despite what some of the pathetics on this thread have been posting.
- to the get-a-lifersit's called baseball, not dodgeball.
This isn't little-league, these guys are preparing for college...and life.
catcher made a choice, and accepted the results. No college for you until you grow up - umpirethis was a deliberate act, and I believe that the pitcher was in on it. Criminal charges should be considered. The umpire might have been killed if the ball hit another part of his head
- info providedThank you Brian for providing much needed information to this discussion. The pitcher is draft calibur, there was obvious distain for the calls the ump had been making, and it was the catchers brother who had just been called out prior to this inning. This is the kind of information that is needed when making an opinion on something. Now that I know, I agree this was intentional. I bet that if that catcher was on scholarship, he wouldn't have lost the scholarship.
- ConsequencesThe catcher did it deliberately. In the heat of the moment, he obviously had a beef with the ump, and did something he will live to regret. We all are held accountable for our actions whether they are in the heat of the moment or not. I am sure the catcher will think next time before he lets his emotions rule his head again. He will have a lifetime to do better or get worse. It is his choice. If I was the Gordon College coach, I wouldn't want the potential controversy because it might hurt my career. No one can fault him for rescinding the offer. I would do the same. Intentionally setting out to hurt someone should be unacceptable under any standard. I don't understand people who say, Oh, he's young, he shouldn't be punished by taking away his scholarship. Whatever happened to making mistakes, taking the consequences, and learning from it. If he gets no consequences this time, chances of him doing similiar things in the future are great. If he gets his consequences now, he has a greater chance of learning and turning from those ways. Good old fashioned common sense should rule here.
- umpire hit by ballNeal, you could have a bunch of blind people on the jury and that twit would be guilty.you don't need anyone with an i.q. of 10 or higher. That very well could ruin any opportunities for him in baseball. Might have to take up break dancing. Cheers.
- baseballHigh pitch and a duck...someone playing catcher position does not duck a pitch like that. I would say intentional.
- yepon purpose
- Umpire HitThe catcher knew exactly what he was doing. Protesting the umpire's calls. He should be suspended and the Gordon College coach did exactly the right thing to withdraw the invitation.
- Classless actThis was a classless act by a couple of kids who think they are bigger than the game of baseball. From my understanding of the incident from people who were there, these players were upset about the pitcher's brother (shortstop) striking out on a called third strike in the previous inning. This was their way of retaliating against the umpire. It was a blatant act of revenge. When a pitcher and catcher get crossed up, rarely does it ever result in the catcher completely missing the ball.
For those who do not know, this pitch was probably somewhere in the 90 mile per hour range. This pitcher was drafted 15th overall in the draft that occurred yesterday so he is not simply a high school pitcher. He is a "kid" with major league talent and skills.
Kudos to the college that rescinded the catcher's offer. For a college who probably has coaches who have been around the game of baseball their entire lives (and seen pitcher/catcher cross-ups) to so quickly act the way they did should be enough to indicate this act was deliberate. - Need all the informationExamine the situation, please. Was there an arguement prior to this? Is it possible the catcher was crossed up on this pitch? There has to be more to this story than we are seeing in this clip. Was something said that would indicate intent? I doubt the pitcher is that accurate.
- Wild Pitch????Catcher should have made an attempt to catch the ball if he wanted everyone to believe it was a wild pitch. This was planned to hurt the ump.
- Wow -- this is crazy...The catcher should have caught the pitch, but I don't think he intended to have the ball hit the umpire. I can see a suspension or something like that, but to ruin a possible baseball career over an accident? I know that actions have consequences, but the degree of those consequences should be taken into consideration, yes? The catcher needs to take responsibility for his actions, but I think the consequences in this case might have been a bit too harsh. It stinks that the umpire got hit, but there is a chance that could happen. I don't think any of this was done malicously. But - what's done is done... I hope the catcher has learned something from all of this...
- Isn't it obvious?Looks like the head coach at Gordon College doesn't want to have anything to do with the catcher. Does that not speak volumes, or what?
- Umpire HitDidn't look like pitcher is involved. Catcher looks deliberate
- CommentsSome of the comments here are as empty headed as the pitcher and catcher. "No one got hurt" is about as stupid a comment as the intentional stunt itself.
- Ump HitIt looked to me more like the idiot catcher was afraid of the ball, what he was doing playing for a championship team in a championship game.
I would of tossed the kid for THAT, for being a wuss.
As for the UMP, He IS A WUSS. No one can know the intentions of those kids, besides anyone who knows their rear front their frontside should know 9 out of 10 kids dont have the kind of control to hit someone in the face. Major Leaguers is a different story.
All we need are a bunch of soccer/ baseball moms talking about these kids intentions.
And waiting for the medical report to file a law suit, seems like if they REALLY had a case and KNEW? and could PROVE their intentions they wouldnt need to WAIT to file a suit. They would, (notice WOULD) have a case. THEY DO NOT. GET A GRIP!!!!!!!
He should be fired for being a baby. - Ump hitIt was a fastball. The catcher called for it and that's what was thrown. If you look closely, you'll see the catcher drop to his knees as the ball is released. I was a college catcher and I can speak from experience. Intentional. The ump needs to get over it though. No harm was apparently done. I think the college did the right thing as they can't afford the bad press. Ny the way, several Atlanta Braves reviewed this video and they all said it was intentional.
- Who cares? Are you kidding me?this is the attitude that boils down the ills of our society. As a high school umpire, we put up with enough crap to not have to deal with this. If the players would throw, catch and hit like they are supposed to, there would hardly ever be any issues with umpires. They screw up and we umpires are required to fix it because they take routine play and turn it into a banger. Then get made with us if the call goes against them. The catcher got his due. Sorry, no college ball for you.
- Ump hitI agree with Bob......get a life
- Hit UmpireI umpired for several years at the high school and college level. This happened to me a few times, but nothing as blatent as the video. Catcher's father probably told him this a good way to make your point about "bad" calls
- CatcherLooked like it was on purpose to me, but the pitcher may not have known the catcher was planning on ducking. The umpires in major league baseball get hit sometimes, so for this ump to sue is pretty stupid. At least he didn't get hit 3 feet lower.
- Pitched ballDeliberate
- Catcher DuckingLook -
Ignorance is not illegal. If it was 95% of Americans would be in jail. Instead we let them vote and give them privileges financially thru taxes off my hard earned money. That is illegal, address that and leave this kid alone.
At most they should have kicked him out of the game immediately.
If not let's impose equal stupid stiff penalties on Pro Ball Players. Fire all and end contracts/ $$ on those that has done and is doing steroids. Fire every player that has ever lost their cool.
Get a grip. Neal I agree on 99.99% of what you say but you lost it here bud.
You are starting to sound like a bed wetter.(Never thought that would happen) - Injured UmpireFor any good catcher, its almost instinctive to go after a bad pitch. Here there is no attempt whatsoever. Its obvious what's going on here, and Mark Arum ought to know better, being the "jock sniffer" he is.
- Look at the 3rd Base CoachHe KNOWS what just happened...
- Umpire hitSeems to me it is up to the umpire to protect himself,(as the catcher surely was doing). He goes into these games knowing there is always a chance of getting hit by a ball. Thus , he is forewarned. Suing is a classless action. As for the college that rescinded the offer, talk about your no class!!! Get real!!!!
- Ump hitIt did look like the ump got hit intentionally, but who cares? The ump didn't look like he was hurt - it hit him in the mask. The mask is the best place to get hit until the pitcher throws major league speeds. Plus, that pitch looked like a curve ball. Seems to me if it was intentional, it would have been a fastball. Just my 2 cents
- bad sportlooked like he meant to do that.Shame on him, and maybe this will teach him a lesson................
- get a life.
- No class...Regardless of how the ump called the game, intentionally throwing the ball at the ump is an act of assault. It has no place in baseball (not even in the regular "chin music" gamesmanship that goes on). Absolutely NO class whatsoever. Good for Gordon College for rescinding that offer. Actions have consequences. The sooner these clowns learn that, the better. I hope the ump gives em a legal kick in the pants as well!
- Ump HitA couple of gutless brats. The ump wasn't costing you the game, you just couldn't get it done. Pathetic generation of spineless losers. Coach should have benched them. No ump should have to put up with this crap. NO KID is bigger than the game. Life's hard, little boys. Time to act like you got a pair. Any other poster who says otherwise is probably still squeezing zits and will amount to nothing. Boo-hoo.
- Should have been tossedThe pitcher, catcher and the coach should have been tossed immediately. It's obvious what it was. Does anyone know if there were ejections from this game?
- LOLOLOL BUST HIM AGAIN !!! That was priceless. Hey UMP stop trying to cheat the players and maybe this wont happen to you......that was just a brush back the next one is going to take your arm off!! :)
- Ump hithe probably had it coming. No one and especially no umpire is bigger than the game. Nice job catcher!
- Shoulda Been TossedThat was deliberate. Pitcher and catcher should've been AT LEAST put out of the game if not suspended for the duration.
- UMP HITBeing a past ump for fast pitch softball and baseball I did not see enough of the video to tell for sure but the motion of the glove in the air and the catcher going down at the same time is very suspect as to the intentions.
- UmpStraight OWNED! Get ya mind right ump!!
- BAD ACTINGnever seen a catcher move like that on a pitch over his head.
- after watching the video of this, it sure looks like this was done on purpose to hit the ump
- Baseball pitchWho cares!! Do people REALLY have so much time on their hands that they have to investigate this? No one got hurt! If the ump had a problem with it he can deal with it!! GET A LIFE PEOPLE!!!
