A Loganville woman, who lost in her effort to get the book series banned from Gwinnett County schools, is appealing that decision to the state school board.
Laura Mallory, who has three children at J.C. Magill Elementary, claims Harry Potter promotes and endorses witchcraft. She had asked the Gwinnett County school board to remove the series from school libraries, while admitting that she's never actually read any of the books.
Last month, the county school board rejected her request, saying the popular series encourages students to read. A retired DeKalb County school administrator, who acted as a hearing officer in the case, strongly recommended they stay.
Mallory has now sent a letter to the Gwinnett County school board, notifying them of her intention to appeal to the state. She says she wants to raise awareness regarding the content of the books.
There is no word on when the state school board might take up the matter.
