WSB's Veronica Waters reports with Campbell, 52, not seen as a flight risk or danger to society, U. S. Attorney David Nahmias says he doesn't know yet if prosecutors will oppose an appeal bond.
"It's not the biggest issue in the world to us," Nahmias tells WSB. "Our belief is that Mayor Campbell will serve his sentence. Whether it's in the very near term or after an appeal is completed, it's not that important to us."
Nahmias explains the other factor which comes into play is how likely Campbell's team is to prevail upon appeal.
"We're confident he's not very likely, but we really need to see what issues he's identified when he files the motion, to determine if any of them are even close," Nahmias says.
Judge Richard Story asked both sides to submit briefs on the issue. Campbell's team has 10 days from the sentencing date to file notice of its intent to appeal. He was sentenced Tuesday to 30 months in prison and a $6,000 fine, convicted of failing to pay over $62,000 in income taxes.
