Norcross resident Chris Everhart had taken his three boys- Jake, Logan and Kyle- on their first camping trip. The 300 pound bear showed as the family packed up after dinner, going for a cooler.
When one of Everhart's sons distracted the bear, it dropped the cooler and went for the six-year-old boy. Chris Everhart swung into action. He tells Channel Two Action News, "I picked up a log and threw it at it. It happened to hit the bear in the head. I thought it just knocked it out but it actually ended up killing the bear."
Everhart was cited for not storing his food properly but that's not what he feels bad about. "I feel bad about killing the bear."
Officials with DNR say there has never been a bear attack in Georgia but says wild animals are unpredictable.
