(WSB Radio) -- Voters in Gwinnett County will cast ballots next month in a non-binding referendum to determine the public's support for the extention of MARTA rail service into the county.

About 100 people attended an informational meeting Monday night at the Global Mall in Norcross. Most were in favor of county residents paying a one cent sales tax to fund the expansion.

The new line would feature four stops over 11 miles, ending at Gwinnett Place Mall. The proposed line would include heavy and light rail connecting the county to MARTA from the Doraville transit station.

MARTA general manager Beverly Scott says if approved, the new line could be operational within seven years. Estimates on the cost for expansion into Gwinnett range from $75 million to $215 million a mile.

Twice in the last 30 years, Gwinnett residents have said no to MARTA. A second informational hearing will be held Tuesday night at Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville.

The vote is set for July 15th, the same day as Georgia's Democratic and Republican primaries.

What others are saying

  • Marta To Gwinnett
Marta needs to be in Gwinett. Traffic may not improved that much with Marta. However, gas may approach $5 to $6 dollars. It would give people an alternative to driving their car.
  • MARTA in Gwinnett
Not another penny! It will be years before anything meaningful will help anyone. They are talking about rail lines many years into the future - forgot it if you think it will help us now.
  • Marta to Gwinnett?
Great idea! I live in Gwinnett and have wished for the last 4 years that Marta had rail line and train station at Gwinnett Place mall to help minimize driving time and save money on gas.
  • By doing the math one can see that a one cent sale tax if worth getting MARTA in Gwinnett. This way we can all park our cars most of the time and go to go work or take our kids to ball game. I don't know about the rest of you but I would enjoy catching up on my reading on my way to work or from work. So please let support this and get it passed. It is time.
  • Hopefully residents will vote with their head this time and think long term. Poor transportation is keeping Atlanta from becoming a truly great city.
  • It's about time!
Greed's driving this- Gwinnett's been losing so much business from northern company's that won't move there since there's such poor public transportation infastructure that they finally wised up. I'm sure the taxpayers will scream- Marta will only bring lower class blacks and crime then proceed to vote it down.
