(WSB Radio) -- With foreclosures in Georgia hitting record highs, state lawmakers want to go after those companies who claim they can rescue homeowners from foreclosure but in reality want to scam them.
WSB's Sandra Parrish reports
Marietta attorney Kris Scar has been helping clients go after companies that claimed to want to help homeowners facing foreclosure, only to take their money with no results. Those fees can range from $900 to $1200.
Another scam includes local operators who go to the homeowner directly saying they can get a new loan for them.
Bill Brennon with Legal Aid is working with lawmakers to craft either a bill dealing with the two scenarios or to strengthen existing law. He says Georgians are particularly vulnerable because the state has the fastest foreclosure system in the country.
Brennon says unfortunately thousands will have already lost their homes by the time state lawmakers are able to consider the bill early next year.
