(WSB Radio) Fred Crane's acting career included only a few credits, spread out over four decades. But it was his first ever role that earned him immortality.

Crane, who died Thursday at the age of 90, spoke the first line of the classic film, "Gone With the Wind."

Playing Stuart Tarleton, one of the red haired twins, Crane uttered the line, "“What do we care if we were expelled from college, Scarlett? The war is going to start any day now, so we’d have left college anyhow.”

To that, Scarlett O'Hara, played by Vivien Leigh, replies, "“Fiddle-dee-dee. War, war, war. This war talk’s spoiling all the fun at every party this spring.”

Crane was the last credited male actor still alive from the 1939 film. His twin brother in the film was played by George Reeves, who later gained fame as TV's Superman.

Following "Gone With the Wind," Crane's next film appearance was ten years later in the movie, "The Gay Amigo." He made four television appearances in the 1960's, and did theater work.

Crane was well known in souther California, where he hosts a classical music radio show on station KFAC for 40 years.

Following his time on radio, Crane and his wife, Terry, owned a registered historic 1846 Confederate home and Civil War hospital in Barnesville, Georgia, which he and his wife Terry operated as the Tarleton Oaks Bed & Breakfast.

Crane's death leaves only a few credited performers still alive from "Gone With the Wind."

Olivia de Havilland, who played Melanie Wilkes, is the movie’s only remaining principal star. Other living cast members include Ann Rutherford (Careen O'Hara); Alicia Rhett (India Wilkes); Cammie King (Bonnie Blue Butler); and Mickey Kuhn (Beau Wilkes).

Crane was married five times and is survived by four children in California; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

What others are saying

  • Their Wedding
I am sorry to hear of Mr. Crane's passing. He and his wife, Terry, were loveable people with an honestly fairy tail beginning. I am happy that they had that moment of time together. Beautiful memories, forever.
  • quick note
Nice summary!.. just one correction is that Fred played Brent in the movie.. the screen credits never fixed the error.
