(WSB Radio) - The Clayton County School system has lost its accreditation. The 40-member national Accreditation Commission voted last night to revoke accreditation.
The association issued a scathing report in February calling Clayton County's school board "dysfunctional'' and "fatally flawed.'' It gave the district until Sept. 1 to overhaul the system.

Clayton Co. realtor Altimese Dees discusses what this means for the county
A team from the association visited the Georgia school district last week to review whether the district had done enough to keep its accreditation.
Clayton County School system becomes the third system to lose accreditation in 40 years.
Meanwhile, Gov. Sonny Perdue issued an executive order Thursday ousting four board members after a judge recommended removing them for violating Georgia's open meetings laws and ethics code.
Losing accreditation means students who graduate from the suburban Atlanta district won't be eligible for some scholarships or admission to many colleges. It also could drive down property values in the county and hurt economic development, community leaders have said.
What others are saying
- racistwhy is evertbody trying to blame US blacks for losing our accredtation. it is some low down whites that had something to do with it , like the ones on the board. so stop blaming blacks for your problems and if u dont like it just move out of CC. Its many blacks out there that are respectable and not all whites are respectable, so stop blaming us for our misfortunes. written by a BLACK GIRL!!!!!!!
- RidiculousI read all of the comments and it really all boils down to a racial thing! The black people took over and turned Clayton Co into a giant PIT! No one can sell a house since people are scared to live in the nasty place! When are you black people gonna start acting like humans and clean up!
- NoThat is not right
- I cannot believe some of these comments. You all are so miss-informed! First, CC had until the end of the school year to be re-instated and none of this will even matter. If they are re-instated their accreditation will be back and no one will be affected. Second, seniors that are graduating this year will have come from an accreditation high school because the decision does not go into affect until the end of the school year. Third, the hope scholarship will still be in effect for the junior ans sophomore students until 2011! Fourth, CC can become accreditatied by anoth accreditation divison, SACS CASI is not the only one! And who's to say that CC wont get their act together before the end of the school year! You all need to stop all of this bashing and make sure you do your part in helping all these poor 50,000 student you keep talking about!
- What a messWhat a mess... but to crown it, you put people in charge that cannot speak English - their native language - correctly (Superintendent)
When your own tribe sells your ancestors into slavery, I guess your heritage is not the greatest. But therefore you all have the opportunities that the USA offers and you do not have to live in cow-patty homes and go hunt for your dinner. Yet, you would not realize these great opportunities, you'd rather sit there and hold your hands open and ask for everything to be given to you and blame everybody else for your problems. Well, you brought that problem on yourselves by being what you are... And of course, other people will fix it for you, just as is expected... - Correct English"He sure does be spending alot of time on here writing comments under fictional names. Whose doing his show today?" Nice grammar- must be a CC grad.
- accreditatonsi heard that if you in elementary and middle school you have to start all over
- Black CultureI am adding to anothers post here about black culture and whether it improved socially or economically. The fact is that there has never been a black culture of any great historical importance, period. That is not to say that there are no wonderfully small and laid back black cultures, but as a whole; there has never been one that added a great wonder to the world or even built a great society at all.
There are those that would argue that the blacks built the pyramids and I have heard the arguments and seen the revisionist posters regarding this. I can not begin to explain how low it is for one, or a group of people, to steal anothers culture. That is despicable and lends credence that blacks are thieves. It is a well known fact that the Arabs, Egyptians, and possibly Jewish slaves, built the pyramids. I know that they havent quite laid out the how it was done, but the fact is blacks did not build the pyramids.
I was told that white people burned their great library at Alexandria (Cairo) after stealing the blacks knowledge, made them ignorant to keep them in slavery . This is not only incorrect but totally absurd! This activist does not even know history. The library was built by Alexander (a whitey) and the library was destroyed about four times (research it yourself) with the last destruction at the hands of the Muslims. You know them .those peace loving practitioners of a violent religion!
Regarding the slavery issue we all have been brainwashed into believing it as being caused by the white man, the American white man well the truth is black slavery was started by blacks in Africa because of their own tribal warfare, sold them to Arabs, who traded them to Portuguese thereby introducing it in to Europeans who made it a profitable venture.
Well what about now? Well you can expect more of them same incompetence with black leaders. Dont believe me? Look around the metro area. Why did Sandy Springs become a city? Why is Dunwoody seeking city status? What about the Nichols courthouse shooting? I have a friend who told the Chief Deputy at the time about the lax security at the courthouse back in 1993. The warning and advice went in one ear and out the other. In a nut shell, the cause of that incident rests upon political correctness. Hiring those who were welfare recipients and had no skills but dropping French fries. Then there are the overweight deputies who get winded walking down the hall, just dripping in sweat from the exertion of the steps to get from point A to point B.
But I digress for a moment; the true cause of this school issue rests with CARELESSNESS, PRIDE, and ENVY. The voters elected incompetent leaders, doing so because of race, and got what they paid for. And in the end no one thought about the children; the ones who actually suffered the most. - Lazy parents to blameI see how everyone says they feel sorry for the kids and residents and so on. It's the residents of CC that brought this on. They complain when they hear of possible tax increases- which are some of the lowest in the metro area- to help the schools and police. They don't show up at meetings to voice their displeasure with the way things are being run. If these parents cared about what was going to happen to their children's future the way Fayette Co residents cared when there was a possiblity of an influx of CC students coming to their schools, then maybe things wouldn't be so bad. Fayette Co had over 40,000 emails/letters from residents voicing their opinion on allowing CC students attend their schools. Of course CC residents called this racial prejudice by Fayette people for not wanting their CC kids in their schools. Not seeing that Fayette pays 3-5 times more in taxes and don't want people free-loading off them. They pay more so this type of thing won't happen. CC had less than 400 show for their meetings with the board. You do the math. The people of CC are so lazy and want everything done for them by someone else and so nothing gets done. This is what is left. The kids can thank their lazy parents because their parents would rather sit at home and do nothing instead of going out and providing for thier families and doing something to help themselves. instead of relying on everyone else to do everything for you how about stop feeling sorry for yourselves and do something about what is going on. I'm done.
- Clayton County BOE AccreditationI live and work for Clayton County BOE, although this is very sad day! I truely, THANK YOU, SACS, for not looking the other way, I pray the focus will truely be on the education for our CHILDREN and community in which we live, and should be able to be PROUD of! THANK YOU!!
- Not about Race but the ChildrenThe loss of accreditation was not a reflection on the 50,000 students and teachers in the Clayton County school district. There are great students and teachers in the district. As a long time resident of this county, I have been pleased with the education my children are receiving. I moved to Clayton because it was so close to Atlanta and yet it was affordable. It is a commuters dream to downtown travel.
I have children who are honor students, play in the school orchestra and are involved in the community. We attend church, take pride in our community and have great neighbors that are Black, White, Hispanic and Asian. When my neighbor next-door travel they ask us to keep watch on their home and we do like wise. We share baked goods and exchange news about our families. I encouraged my neighbor when her husband had a heart attack and she encouraged me last year as I was racing to complete my masters degree. My neighbor is White and I am Black. Clayton has had its share of social ills that are prevalent in any metropolitan area. However it saddens me when I read the blogs that blame this on race.
As others have expressed it is a far more serious issue such as poor management and poor judgment on behalf of the school board and the voters. I hope that something can be done in order to help the children. I am contemplating an offer for employment out of state so we may be moving. The question remains on, what will happen to the families that cannot sell their homes or who do not have the resources to transfer their children to private schools or other counties? - This is not a racial issueAs a 27-year resident of Clayton County and former teacher in the school system, I see the need to point something out to those folks trying to make a racial issue out of this debacle.
Even when CC had a majority white population and whites ran the schools, this system was nothing to brag about. Its students generally posted the lowest average test scores in the metro area and only a handful went on to finish college.
Some of these posts make it sound as though CC schools went from being the best in the state to the worst in the nation. Even though it has produced a few outstanding graduates, the CC school system has never risen above medicority. Its decline, while sad, has not been precipitous. - NOT racistI truly am not racist, but I am also not blind nor unwilling to face the truth no matter what form it is in. I challenge ANYONE to present an example of an area in the US where the population has been converted from majority White to majority Black that has improved socially and economically after the fact.
I will gladly stand corrected. - A look into the futureI have been working in CC for over two years now. I have coworkers who grew up here, and they describe the area as a place that was "once a great place to live". It obviously is no longer such.
The mindset of the urban Black community is to blame for this situation. T-shirts proudly proclaiming "we took Clayton" are a fine example of this line of thinking. Yes, you certainly did overtake Clayton...and how has the area been improved by this accomplishment?
Higher crime rates, lower property values, deteriorating school systems, increased gang activity and drug use...these are the hallmarks of a region which has been overtaken by the Black community. When your children idolize thugs, pimps, drug dealers, and murderers...when they are taught they do not have to conform to civilized standards of behavior...when they have been led to believe the government and society at large owes them something because of the color of their skin...when it becomes acceptable to play the 'race card' whenever you are asked to be accountable for your actions...these are the things that erode the Black community, and cause the end result we are seeing now in Clayton.
Are all Blacks this way? Absolutely not. I know and have worked with many fine people who I respect and trust, and they are Black. They are also hard working, honest people who believe it is their own responsibility to provide for the well being of their family. It's simply too bad they aren't the majority in their own racial demographic. - Thought Bootz had a radio show...He sure does be spending alot of time on here writing comments under fictional names. Whose doing his show today?
- ApplaudAs a Clayton County resident for over 36 years, I must applaud our governor for ordering those four defiant board members out of office! This is a giant step to repairing the damage to our school system. I also think that SACS has been more than generous to Clayton County in its accreditation evaluation! However, my heart breaks for our children.
Ms. Judy - TO ???Don't you be a coward, why don't you add your name to the comment?!
- Jeff's commentWho are you talking about when you say "they"? Don't be a coward. Say what you mean and don't beat around the bush!
- Clayton CountySomeone should have realized that the schools were going to be in trouble when it got to the point that you could not stop and get gas without getting robbed at gunpoint or worse. Clayton County is a PIT and I quite frankly don't want these people to move from there. Keep it on the southside!!!! Do not infect other countys!
- GovernmentName one program the goverment does right.....and you people send your kids to the government to be educated! Most of you probably think government schools are free.
- clayton countythis is what happens when they are in the role of leadership.
- Welcome to DiversityCLAYTON COUNTY WELCOME TO THE NEW AMERICA! This school system is only a micro-cosmism of what is in store for this country and her people! Those being removed were incompetent to begin with and were voted in only because their race. I used to live in Clayton County and it has become a third world region.
There is an oligarchy running this country, Bush is a puppet, WHO MUST DESTROY AMERICA to gain the world! They are winning with their many ways to divide her with; brainwashing us with their brand of social equality, fairness, race issues, divorce, diversity, etc. All the while they encourage illegal immigration from our southern boarder AND WE DO NOTHING!
It is known that to destroy America, you must destroy the middle class. It is the central core of her values, skills, and economy... HER STRENGTH! The root word for "Diversity" is "Divide" which our pledge of allegiance warned would make us fall! How many elections have been stolen from the actual citizens by voter fraud?
There is no more patriotism, poorly taught US history, no sense of a unified people, drugged and medicated kids, and women with some social evil to vanquish. Divorce is all too common - which destroys the family; the foundation block for any society. Destroy the family; the rest will follow. How do you destroy the family? The battle of the sexes! How do you destroy the next generation of men? Have insecure, self indulgent women who believe that little boys, who are being boys, must have something wrong with them and give them a pill. It was ADD then ADHD, now it is Autism.
If others are to be empowered that, by inverse logic, dictates that someone must be "disempowered". Who is it that going to be? I saw a report that states that we will no longer be the majority by 2042! I can't believe that we are allowing ourselves to be disenfranchised, thinned down, and bred out from our land, with illegal immigration and the importation of every ethnicity from around the world; and you wonder why there is a problem. We still cling to this false sense that we can have the life our parents and grandparents had. Our children WILL NOT!
This generation is so self-indulgent, it will not think of the next generation which is the point of having kids; but why worry about that when you can just have them ripped out of the womb and be flat on your back by the end of the week. If you can't support your society because your population is in decline... IMPORT!
WE DID THIS TO OURSELVES BY ALLOWING IT TO HAPPEN!
LIBERALISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER
When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty. --Thomas Jefferson
Fundamental Principle of Justice: Do not make equal what is unequal! -- Friedrich Nietzsche
"Nobody is more inferior than those who insist on being equal." Nietzsche
! - there ya go!It was coming and the lack of basic intelligence was glaring. Clayton county is a cesspool....henry or dekalb counties are next. Write it down!
- other's comentsI am reading the other comments and have come to the conclusion that most of the writers are graduates of the Clayton County school system.
- AGREE WITH 'M.LEWIS'Agree with 'M. Lewis' blog that this is an embarrassment to the entire state! It is not as if this came as a surprise. The system has been on probation. Questions of 1) where was the leadership; 2) why was something not done earlier to allow 50,000 kids to be placed into limbo; 3) why did local education management/leadership fail to take positive steps along the way; 4) why did the system (Clayton) attempt to disregard the specifics of steps identified by SACS; and in all candor, why should SACS even consider an appeal when the Clayton system has failed to adhere to their previous counsel??
To call it an embarrassment to the state and to public education in the state of Georgia is an understatement. THE FIRST IN 40 YEARS!! Our politicians --- all of them -- should hang their heads in shame, and BE REQUIRED TO PLACE THIS DEBACLE AFFECTING 50,000 KIDS ON THEIR RESUMES OF THE FUTURE!! - Claryton County SchoolsI am so GLAD this happened!!! I am a resident of the county and this is exactly what we deserve. It seems thaty when something goes wrong they put the race card in play. Well this time it is totally correct. We put them in office and look what happened. We cannot blame anyone but ourselves. We did not got to the polls to vote for the right reason. We voted for the color not the qualifications. Well Clayton look what you finally did!. property values are dead in the water for at least 2 years and we have the highest forclousures in the state. I guess this is what we have to live with. The high school kids of CC will have a BLACK mark on their records for the mess we created by voting BLACK. How ironic, don't you think. Well maybe this is a blessing, as the element that was dumped here and the element that will hopefully be leaving will soon see the light and go away. Clayton County is a good county but as we all know, when the property values go south the the smart poeple come back to buy cheap and the better way of life and continue. You know what I mean too!!
That just my thoughts!!! - New StudentsI've lived in CC my whole life, and i must say that I'm just disappointed. I'm a 9th grader and am an honor student. I will admit that our test scores suck, but the only people to blame for that are all these lower-income families who don't care about education who keep moving here. The crime rate was never this bad. It's all the new people from all those impoverished areas who keep coming over here. For one, they just need to stop building houses all together here in Clayton County.
Crime: for the first time ever; I was at Southlake Mall and heard GUNSHOTS. They were so close. It never used to be like that here. So when you want to put the blame on all of the students, make sure it's the ones who can't even read and write, the ones who don't even care about their education. - A management issueThis entire debacle is a management issue. It is the mishandling and mismanagement from the top officials at the school board that cost this systemm its accreditation. I am sure that the kids get just as mediocre an education as other school systems around the state. Just look at the test scores...not the best, but not the worst either. As soon as people realize that "education" is not what schools do, they will realize that true education comes from living and upbringing. Schools train people. The same way a trade school trains one for a particular job, so does public grade school. It trains students to be just good enough to be a contributing member of society, i.e., taxpayer. With goals that low, it is easy to see how students in all systems fall by the wayside.
- CCSchoolsIt is a shame all suffer, but look at the test scores. Not too much great is going on in the classroom either. i think the whole system needs to be overhauled.
- clayton co acredYes the Governor and City of Atlanta sent folks to this county to "clean up for the olympic games" and now this is what we have. Why dosen't the Governor and Legislature disolve the clayton county government and give the area back to Fayette and Henry where it came from?
- Clayton CountyNow that we see the results of voting for a public servant because of their skin color and not their qualifications, let's all go out and vote for OBAMA and see if we can turn the US into a giant Clayton County.
- Another reason to seriously consider home schoolThis is not the only county that is providing inferior education. Home schoolers are exploding in numbers. It is our responsibility to educate our kids. Don't turn them over to the government for their education.
Shame on you Clayton School Board Members! - Little HaitiClayton County is like our own little Haiti. We'll be helping them build mud huts in the next few years.
- Dekalbs NextDekalb County this is your probable future.
- school boardwe should all remember that we elect these members.... we get what we ask for. We need more people to hold our officials accountable. This is really sad for the kids
- Let This BE A Lesson -- NOT ONLY FOR CLAYTON!Hope this can serve as a lesson for school systems across the country. The real losers in this are 50,000 innocent kids. Their elders LET THEM DOWN for not getting involved and voting for COMPETENT SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS; DID NOT HOLD THE BOARD TO ACCOUNT; DID NOT CHECK OUT THEIR CREDENTIALS PRIOR TO VOTING FOR SELF SERVING INCOMPETENTS; and sadly, ONLY HAVE THEMSELVES TO BLAME!
Learning and education are not easy. Parents have to be involved; discipline has to be applied; and individual support has to be given to that child.
Now -- as a result of the voter's lack of action, property values will plummet; businesses will no doubt look elsewhere to set up shop; and thousands of kids are going to be in limbo!
Where are your school board members now? What did they do for your child?
Maybe it is now time for parents to seriously consider home schooling, and school choice. - Glad I moved also...I moved out of Clayton County a few years ago. It's a shame that it has come to this, but anyone who wasn't blind can see the problems that have afflicted the county in recent years and how incompetant the various government offices have become.
I hate to see it, but thank god I sold my house 3 years ago! - Clayton's Loss is a Loss for the StateClayton Counties lost is a poor reflection not only on the county but the state as a whole. It is a national embarrasment. Now What? for the 50,000 students.
- Years in the making, minutes to crumble.
- Clayton County's Lose of accreditationsPoor kids!!!
Just think of all the juniors and seniors, who counted on some type of scholarship to go to college!
Pray for those kids. - Clayton CountySo glad we moved out of Clayton County 7 years ago. We could see the downslide of the county coming. We moved to get out of that school system. It's really a shame for the kids to have to suffer because of those power hungry board members and the people who voted them in.
- Who is really at fault here, after all it was the voters of Clayton County who elected the present school board. They got what they voted for, the problem is the children suffer and they had nothing to do with it.
- AccreditationNow everyone knows what Morris Brown College is going through.
- Clayton CountyWe need SAC's to oversea our politicians in DC and give recommendations. I am proud someone stood up for what is right
- AccreditationDoes this come as a surprise? Only 16% of clayton county residents came out to vote for school board members..such apathy. The supertindent and the entire board needs to be terminated.
It is time for the state to take over and hire an independent firm to help restore accreditation.
The board should be sued by the parents.
It is sad the students are paying the price. - incompetenceComplete Incompetence at its finest, too bad the kids have to pay for it.
- Ha Ha HaHa Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha. To all the Idiots that voted these people in - Just know that your kids will never get a higher education, and your house is worth nothing.
- Govenor come on downLet the governor get involve to remove the maneuvers and replace it with flowers. Clayton education board is holing the students hostage.
- Accreditation lossIt's a sad day for a school system that in the past has been so strong. It's unfortunate for the students. It seems that only a few of the school board members really had a commitment to the students. Those would be the ones who resigned months ago.
- AccreditationIt is my humble opinion that the school board should be removed and a special election held with former Board members barred from running. It is pathetic that these kids will suffer because the School Board chooses to act like children themselves. The taxpayers and parents of Clayton County students should be marching on the School Board office with torches and pitchforks. How bad does the performance of elected officials have to get before the Governor steps in? Isn't it about time that we, as citizens, start demanding a higher level of performance from our employees? As high and mighty at these folks at the Clayton County School Board think that they are, they are merely employees of the citizens of Clayton County. Fire them all and start over. You couldn't possibly do any worse!!
- IncompetentThere is a lesson here, folks. If you take on a responsibility, you've got to be up to the challenge. There are major implications if you aren't up to the job. Anyone planning to vote for Obama needs to take note and reconsider their plans.
- IdiotsI truly feel sorry for the students and residents of Clayton county. Sorry that they have a complete set of bumbling idiots on their school board. And to think that members of the board had the nerve to argue against their removal, saying that "they didn't know what they did wrong". Idiots. Complete idiots. Remove them, then prosecute them for willful misconduct and mismanagement of the school system. Then let's see if they can actually hold on to a job in the private sector. In the mean time, get rid of the superintendent. You know, the one that SACS specifically said was not qualified.
- Clayton County SchoolIt's sad that the children of Clayton County have to suffer for the behavior of adults.
- Loss of AccreditationWay to GO!!
- AccreditationI think that it is ashame that the Teachers and Students must suffer due to a dysfunctional School Board. I know that in Clayton county Classrooms great things are being done and it seems like that does not count for anything.
