MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) A new contract between Cobb County and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement increases the time an illegal immigrant can be held in the county jail from 48 to 72 hours before they are picked up by federal authorities.

It also increases the daily reimbursement the county receives from federal authorities to $42 from an average $20.

The contract was approved Tuesday night by the county commission. An earlier pact made it possible for county jailers to begin deportation proceedings against arrested illegal immigrants with two misdemeanors or one felony.

Immigrant rights advocates have criticized these practices, saying they could lead to profiling of Latinos and that minor charges could be used as a pretext for jailing a suspect while immigration status is checked.

If I were driving down boulevard at 2 in the morning, the police would profile me (as a white person) as being up to no good. Profiling is based on statistics. In the state of Georgia, the majority of "latinos" are illegal, have broken the law to "reside" in Georgia, and are breaking the law to work in the United States. Any profiling that's done, is based on the majority of "latinos" in Georgia being law-breakers. If this were southern Texas, where there is a large legal community of "latinos", it would be different. But in Georgia, most, not all but most, are lawbreakers. And as lawbreakers, they should be in jail, then on a one-way trip home

Georgia officials continue to implement laws that are trying to take the rug from underneath illegal immigrants. These are laws that show how incapable our government is at creating just and intelligent immigration reform. By the way, I'd like to see all those Georgians that have acquired so much wealth in the past two decades due to immigrant labor stand up and defend illegal immigrants. I guess they don't want to leave their nice East Cobb home that was built by the efforts of illegal immigrants. It's all such a paradox. Que tengan un buen dia...
  • Illegals
The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 signed by President Ronald Reagan on November 6, 1986) is an Act of Congress which reformed United States immigration law. The Act made it illegal to knowingly hire or recruit illegal immigrants (immigrants who do not possess lawful work authorization), required employers to attest to their employees' immigration status, and granted amnesty to certain illegal immigrants who entered the United States before January 1, 1982 and had resided there continuously. The Act also granted amnesty to several million illegal aliens, and its proponents promised (PROMISED) the American public that that would be the last (LAST) amnesty granted.

  • Profiling
Criminals should be profiled based on having broken the law, regardless of sex, race or religion.
  • advocates for illegals
Illegal immigrants should have no rights in the U.S.!
    THEY'RE ILLEGAL!!!!!!
Go back home and fight for your rights there!
  • All 159 Counties in Georgia should do this!
This would help to drive illegal aliens OUT of the State of Georgia, WHICH BY THE WAY, IS THE LAW!!!!!
