ATLANTA (AP) Georgia schools Superintendent Kathy Cox proved she is smarter than a 5th grader, winning a million for her school system on a popular game show on Friday night.
Cox appeared on the third season premiere of Fox's ``Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?'' She answered 10 questions correctly before getting the final million dollar one who was the longest reigning British monarch.
Cox competed against two others on the show, which was filmed last month with host Jeff Foxworthy.
The Republican superintendent drew criticism for appearing on the show from some who said she had better things to do.
Cox said she accepted the invitation because the show is family-friendly and promotes education.

What others are saying
- Cox@ Chris(09/06/08 10:52:36 AM): What makes you think the million is going only to Cobb? She's the STATE superintendent, not Cobb County's superintendent. But after reading your comment, I'm guessing you were educated in Clayton County, right?
- CoxI think it was great! It looked good for Georgia, with Jeff Foxworthy living here and all as well. What's wrong with what she did? It does promote education and is a family show. Something we don't have much of on TV these days. She can be critisized for a lot of things, but not for this. I was proud of her and thought she was funny :)
- WHAT HAVE TAX PAYERS CONTRIBUTED YOU ASK?In response to Andrew: over the past six years, taxpayers through out the state have contributed Billions of dollars in hopes of bringing the State of Georgia out of the doldrums of being at the bottom in public education. It seems that the more money we throw at the problem, the worse we get! NYC has turned their system around; Alabama is making progress; but at the end of each year, we seem to get more excuses. Nothing against Ms. Cox, but just think she is in the wrong office. She may be one of the greatest teachers in the state, but the state's overall status in public education speaks to her ability to change what NEEDS TO BE CHANGED IF THIS STATE EVER WANTS TO ATTRACT BUSINESS!
- Still isn't good at her jobToo bad she can't run the system as well as she played.
- Kathy Cox should be in the classroom...All that show demonstrated was that her true skills are in the classroom - she did not demonstrate any skills that would be expected of a State Superintendent of Schools - skills such as analysis, planning, administration, organization. So she can spell and could remember some facts - that does not qualify her for her current position. Now, if she had won on Trump's show that might mean something.
- Kathy Cox smarter than a 5th Grader...All I have to say is Kathy Cox got her school system a $1,000,000. What have critics contributed? In the words of Chris Farley... "JACK SQUAT!!!" They did spend money on a commercial though bashing her for going on the show. You know I'm sure she had some vacation time to use when she went on the show. Her critics could have used that money to promote education instead of piss it away bad mouthing someone... What a bunch a jack holes...
- Cox is Smarter than 5th GraderI liked how Cox weighed the risk between $500K and $1 mil. She stated that she would have to say she dropped out, and we're trying to keep kids in school.
It was great! And then she won! - Go Kathy! She was by far the best contestant they've had. She demonstrated good test taking methods for kids who face tests and struggle with them. Anyone who criticizes a woman who just gave a million dollars (minus taxes) to the GA Dept. of Education is doing so for purely political reasons. She had no obligation to give the money away and I can't think of a better use of her time.
- Smarter than a 5th graderMrs.Cox's did an outstanding job. How many educators do you know, raise / donate a million dollars by useing there education to when a game show. I'm sure that Cobb County is very happy to have a extra million to spend on there students. And very proud to have there school system represented by one of our own. It's about time we saw our tax dollars at work. Thanks Superintendent Kathy Cox.
- Give it a rest!I can't understand why anyone would be upset about Kathy Cox spending a day on a game show and winning $1,000,000 for our schools. Georgia schools have suffered from decades of neglect. One day of the Superintendent's time isn't going to undo that neglect.
Parental involvement is by far the most important factor in determining whether or not a child gets a good education. Roughly two thirds of Georgia's kids get a good education. The one third that suffers does so primarily because their parents are checked out.
