ATLANTA (AP) Former Atlanta Mayor Bill Campbell, now serving a prison sentence, asked the Georgia Supreme Court today to allow him to voluntarily surrender his license to practice law in the state.

Campbell has been a member of the Georgia Bar since 1977.

According to state bar rules, because Campbell was convicted of a felony, he is in violation of the Georgia rules of professional conduct.

Campbell appealed his 30-month sentence for tax fraud in June, but the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld his conviction.

He is scheduled to be released from federal prison on October 25, 2008.

During his March 2006 trial, Campbell was also acquitted of federal bribery and racketeering charges stemming from accusations that he lined his pockets with payoffs from city contractors as the leader of Atlanta during the 1990s.
