County commissioners have approved a total zoning moratorium, beginning next month.

Paulding has no source of water; no rivers, no reservoirs. It's dependent on the Cobb-Marietta water authority. So, to conserve water, the county is taking restrictions to a new level.

County Chairman Jerry Shearin tells WSB's Richard Sangster, the ban does away with state exceptions, such as newly installed landscaping, nurseries and commercial car washes, unless the car wash recirculates its water, in which case it may remain open.

Shearin says he hopes the county's two municipalities, Dallas and Hiram, will meet next week and adopt the same restrictions.

The county commission met Monday afternoon, in an emergency session, and voted on the proposal.
