(WSB Radio) An Atlanta Police officer was taken to Grady Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries after a suspect tried to run him down.

Officer Steve Coleman tells WSB's Jennifer Griffies it happened around 5:15 Tuesday afternoon when the officer was trying to make a routine traffic stop at Peachtree Street and Linden Avenue.

"A suspect vehicle attempted to strike the officer, and the officer discharged his weapon. Don't know how many rounds were fired. The officer suffered minor injuries while trying to avoid the vehicle.

The two people in the vehicle were stopped a short time later.

The driver, 21-year-old Willie James Banks, has been charged with aggravated assault against a police officer. The passenger in the car was not charged.

Banks, who was ordered held on $127,000 bond, is a suspect in a string of car break-ins.
