A day after he announces his run for Governor, State School Superintendent John Barge has to deal with an embarrassing goof on his campaign website.
The word “governor” was misspelled.
“Who hasn’t misspelled a word,” he tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish. “I’m not going to cast stones at our folks. We caught the mistake quickly and changed it.”
Barge is hoping it will not become the focus of why he’s entering the race.
“We’ve got bigger problems than the ones we have if that’s the biggest issue,” he says.
Barge, who visited four Gwinnett County schools Wednesday named as Schools of Excellence, says there needs to be more support for public education in Georgia.
“Our teachers deserve better and our children in this state deserve better,” he says. “They deserve to have a focus on education and a focus on their preparedness for life.”
Barge is proposing more money be spent for education and for local school systems.
He is among two Republicans running against incumbent Republican Governor Nathan Deal. Dalton Mayor David Pennington has also filed paperwork seeking the office.
“I don’t think being an incumbent is a free pass to a second term,” says Barge. “I think our leaders should earn their second terms.”
