Honor Skip Caray By Retiring #17

We the following feel, that in order to properly honor the voice of the team for 33 years, the Atlanta Braves ball club should retire the number 17 in honor of Skip's legacy.
Skip, Pete and Ernie helped turn the Braves into Americas team with their unforgettable broadcasts on TBS. Since TBS was broadcast originally as SuperStation 17, we feel that retiring the number 17 would help ensure Skip's memory for generations to come. If you have any questions or comments about Retire 17 For Skip, email Mark Arum .

What others are saying
- Retire 17As a long time listener/viewer, I would love to see this happen.
- Retire 17Skip was great i think think they should definately retire that number!
- Retire 17I'm all for it. First time I ever heard Skip was 1976, Braves-Padres, first game of a DH on WTCG-17. Braves lost but Skip, Pete, and Ernie were great.
- Skip CarayI think retiring #17 to honor Skip Caray is most fitting and proper. Listening to Skip was always a highlight and often a riot. I'll miss him!
- skip/17great idea. i couldn't think of what the 17 was for. i feel dumb now
- skip caray/17i'm all for it!f retire the number.
skip was the best. - Retire 17!!!! For Him!I can not believe this!!! I just found out. I have been deployed in New Jersey... this is terrible i grew up with him. I'll miss you Skip. I salute you.
- Retire 17!!Yes! Cool idea Mark!
- retire #17 for Skip!!!!!!!!!!Got my vote. R.I.P. Skip.
- Great idea!!I think it would be a fitting tribute to Skip to have #17 retired in his honor. I also think that it would be good to honor Glenn Hubbard as well, since that's his number with all his years of service to the team as a player and coach. It'd be kinda like when the Detroit Lions retired the #20 for Barry Sanders. They honored Billy Sims also, who was a great player before injuries took their toll on him.
- Please retire #17! This would be an awesome tribute to a fantastic man.
- Retire #17Yes this would be a great thing for the guy that I listened to when I was younger on Channel 17. Go Braves and SKIP WINS!! SKIP WINS!! SKIP WINS!!
- Retire #17?While I TOTALLY agree with a gesture such as this.... I also agree it was TBS that did him dirty at the end...AND I kinda bet that Glenn Hubbard is kinda partial to his current number. I also kinda wonder if Skip would have thought this was such a great idea? Hmmmm....
- Reture No. 17Just say yes !
- Retire 17There needs to be a tribute. This is a great idea!
- What a great ideaI grew up listening to Skip with my Dad, so he unknowingly became part of my routine throughout my life. I have so many good memories associated with his calls and his voice. Therefore I think this is absolutely fitting for such a legend. Lets get it done!
- Retire 17I think its a great idea, But, TBS is the station that tried to kick Pete and Skip off the air and failed to let Skip broadcast playoff games cause he was a "homer" I think some kind of tribute would be great but is "17" really the right one?? TBS was not always good to Skip and Pete.
- Retire 17 for SkipWe will all miss Skip! Retire 17 so that future Braves fans will ask and learn about who Skip was!
- Retire #17What a fitting tribute!
- Retire #17Do it do it do it!
I grew up with Skip sounding off in the background and so I lost a bit of my childhood when he passed. Go Braves. Do it for Skip. - RIP SkipThis would be a monumentally great idea! I back this idea 100%! did you also hear the braves dedicated the broadcast booth to skip: its called skip caray booth (i think).
- Retire #17What a wonderful idea! I'm all for it!
- Retire #17No doubt about it - that's the first thing I thought about, after getting over the shock and sadness, when I heard he had had passed away - a very fitting tribute!!!
- SkipI was #17 in Little League and my dream was to wear #17 for the Braves. But since I'm 34 and my baseball career ended in college, I'll let the Braves have it for Skip, lol...
- retire #17this would add class and integrity with a hint of dry humor to a man who deserves to be remembered.
- Must do it...It would be a travesty if not done.
"The Braves take the field against the Pirates.....like lambs to a slaughterhouse....."
RIP Skip - In Honor of...I completely agree - the number 17 should be retired in honor of Skip Carey. The 4 guys - Don, Joe, Skip, and Pete on TBS - it will never be the same as the days in the 90's and early 2000's. We miss you Skip!
- Retire #17We miss you Skip!
www.skipcaray.com - Fitting TributeFor me Ernie was the voice of the Braves, for many years on WSB. #17 for Skip next to #44 & #3. Long time Braves. RIP
- Skip CarayAs a former Bay Area resident, I'm a life-long A's fan that lost one of my all time favorite broadcasters in Bill King three years ago. As Bill King was the voice of my childhood with his A's, Raiders, and Warriors broadcasts, so Skip Caray was as the Braves and the Hawks to many fans in the Deep South. Both men had a unique style all their own, and both are truly legends of the game.
I truly sympathize with Braves fans who mourn the voice of the South, and honor their wish to pay tribute to Skip.
Retiring #17 in the memory of Skip Caray would be fantastic idea, not just to honor him, but to also preserve his place in baseball lore for years to come. - Count me inI dearly loved Skip, and I'm devastated that he's gone. 17 should be retired in honor of the man. Goodbye Skip. Thanks for all the memories.
- No.17It's a good idea if G. Hubard has no objection. I always liked him too.
- Retire #17Do it for Skip, and for Pete and Ernie. They gave us so much for so many years!
- No Doubt About ItThis is the best idea I've heard in a long time. We'll miss you Skip. I'm with Mark, lets retire #17!
- Great IdeaSkip has been an Atlanta Icon all these years.
- Chopper to ChipperI will be very disappointed if the braves organization does not retire 17 for Skip and Pete. This would be an even bigger mistake than when they pulled Skip a few years ago for being a homer. Ridiculous! I want my announcers to pull for the home team, that what we want! God Bless the Carey Family.
- DO ITI Completly Agree
- Great ideaI support this idea wholeheartedly.
- I'd do it in a heartbeatWhat a true way to honor our broadcasting legend.
- Retire #17Great idea! Hope they do it.
- Retire #17Now that is a jersey I'd buy! Lets do it! It is time to honor the gifts our city has been given by their tremendous voices and minds.
- What a terrific way to honor Skip Carey & the SuperStation. I still miss those days of the Braves!
- Retire #17Let's Do It!
- Retire #17Do it!
- Retire #17What a great tribute to a broadcasting legend. Thank you.
- It's a great idea, and it needs to be done by the beginning of next season at the latest.
- Great idea. This is the least we can do to honor a great man and commentator.
- Give the man his dueHe did a lot for Braves baseball. This Met fan agrees that Caray should be honored.
- Honoring Skip By Retiring No. 17 JerseyI wholeheartedly agree. We should "Go for it!"
- Skip IS 17What a nice way to honor a wonderful man. See it through.
- Retiring #17This is a wonderful idea. Skip Caray's unique style on the radio made me a Braves fan.
- Atlanta Loves SkipI will be there for the memorial service, but I hope that one day, I will go to Turner Field and the number 17 will be prominently displayed on the circle of honor. Regardless of where Skip Carey is from, Skip Carey IS an Atlanta Brave.
- retire #17 for SkipI think they should retire number 17, plus do much more to honor him.
- Retire #17 for Skip CaraySkip was the voice of the Braves for such a long time that he had a tremendous impact on the
team's national exposure. I think that retiring the
number 17 in Skip's honor is appropriate. - Number 17This could eventually be a tribute to not only Skip but Pete and Ernie too. Legends in the booth and Braves hall of Famers. Not to mention Ted Turner's legacy too.
- Number 17Retire #17. Skip was Brave's baseball.
- RETIRE #17While I think it's a good ideal, what about Glenn Hubbard who wears that number, and has for over 25 years. I think Glenn would have some say over this.
- #17 for SkipBrilliant idea. It made me smile. Where do I sign up?
- WSB HeritageSkip Caray's voice will always ring as loud as WSB's Blowtorch Signal. I am honored to have shared even a small part of that heritage. I hope the Braves will acknowledge that #17 will represent Skip Caray in perpetuity as part of the heritage of Atlanta, the Braves Radio Network, and as a founding Father of WTBS.
