Days of rain along with pop-up showers and thunderstorms could cause trees to fall in metro Atlanta.

When the ground becomes saturated from large amounts of rain, trees can topple more easily.

WSB Consumer Expert Clark Howard says, "People get really frustrated when they call me about a tree that's hit their house.

“The neighbor is not responsible if the tree comes from their property; you are, unless the tree is clearly, visibly diseased or dying.”

He says you are left with a choice of making a claim against your own homeowners insurance or just paying to remove the tree yourself.

If the tree did not damage the structure of your house then you are usually better off just paying out of pocket and not claiming it on your insurance, Clark explains.

If you are being proactive and thinking of taking down trees that are in danger of falling, there are a few things to you need to know.

Most importantly, Howard says, “Make sure they have a valid active insurance certificate because tree work is very dangerous.

“If a tree company is not properly insured and a worker gets hurt, you are going to be the one getting sued.”
