052513 bus 6 SHUTTLE BUS WRECK--May 24, 2013 Atlanta: At least 16 people were injured late Friday morning, May 24, 2013 when a hotel shuttle bus and tractor-trailer wrecked at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, according to authorities. The state Department of Transportation said the wreck happened on Loop Road near the exit from I-85 northbound. There were conflicting initial reports on the number of people injured. Atlanta Fire Rescue Department spokeswoman Janet Ward said 18 people were on the shuttle bus. Nine people were being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment and nine were being taken to Atlanta Medical Center, Ward said. College Park police, however, said there were 15 passengers on the bus, and that the shuttle driver and all of the passengers were taken to local hospitals. The shuttle bus slammed into the left side of a tractor-trailer that was apparently making a U-turn. The truck driver was not injured, and police said it had not yet been determined whether the trucker was making a legal U-turn. The bus appeared to have skidded more than 90 feet before hitting the U-turning tractor trailer on Loop Road, where the speed limit is 45 mph. The ramp from I-85 northbound to Loop Road was shut down for several hours by the crash, but the road and ramp reopened shortly before 1 p.m. JOHN SPINK / JSPINK@AJC.COM (JOHN SPINK / AJC)

All westbound lanes of I-20 in west Georgia were shut down for about three hours Wednesday morning Aug. 20, 2014 because of a fiery wreck involving a tractor-trailer and a bus. The crash, which happened around 6:10 a.m. on I-20 westbound near Mile Marker 21 in Carroll County, involved a FedEx tandem-trailer truck and a converted school bus. Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman Tracey Watson said initial indications are that the bus was traveling in the right lane "at a slow rate of speed" when it was hit in the rear by the tractor-trailer. "After impact, both vehicles traveled off the right shoulder of the roadway and overturned," Watson said in an email. "At some point after the crash, both vehicles caught on fire." Watson said both drivers were injured. The trucker was airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and the driver of the bus was taken to Tanner Medical Center in Villa Rica. The eastbound lanes of I-20 in DeKalb County reopened after more than four hours after a tractor-trailer crashed into the median wall and overturned in the middle of the interstate Thursday, Sept 18, 2014. The crash happened shortly before 6 a.m. on I-20 eastbound past Flat Shoals Road in DeKalb County. According to DeKalb police on the scene, a car in the fourth lane from the wall sideswiped a truck in the third lane, forcing the truck into the wall. The truck’s driver was not injured, and the car’s driver was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The car’s driver will be charged with failure to maintain lane, police said. The truck, hauling 28,000 pounds of dry foods, damaged a 30-foot section of the median wall, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. Three of five westbound lanes were blocked as firefighters doused a fire that broke out along the median wall, apparently from fuel that leaked from the wrecked truck. Those westbound lanes were reopened shortly before 9 a.m., but all eastbound lanes remained closed until just after 10 a.m. as crews worked to remove the wreckage.
