Signs go up starting this weekend along Georgia 400 to warning of impending construction at the toll plaza.

Malika Wilkins with the State Road and Tollway Authority says from June 24 through June 27 crews will be installing new transponders above the cruise lanes that will be able to read both Cruise Cards as well as the new Peach Passes that will serve the new I-85 toll lane.

"We want those customers to have a seamless experience when they use Georgia 400 as well as when the I-85 express lanes open up later this summer," she says.

Wilkins says the cruise lanes will be closed starting that Friday at 8pm and will not reopen again until 5am the following Monday.

"We want to let people know in advance... avoid it if they can or make alternate plans," she says.

Wilkins says the SRTA board may actually vote June 20 on whether to suspend the tolls that weekend or longer in order to help with traffic flow.

"It is possible that we actually lift the toll for that entire week starting the 24th through the 30th," she says also referencing a promise by former Gov. Sonny Perdue to suspend the toll briefly once the original bonds are paid off and before the "new" toll begins.

Once construction on the cruise lanes is complete, she says work will then begin to update the cash lanes as well.
