It’s back to school for the state’s largest school system.
The Gwinnett County School District is expecting nearly 2,000 new students this year bringing its total enrollment up to around 178,000.
Schools Superintendent Alvin Wilbanks got of a tour of two new schools opening this year including Baldwin Elementary in Norcross and Coleman Middle School in Duluth.
Kindergarteners at Baldwin will be able to participate in the district’s new Dual Language Emerson Program in which half of the subjects will be taught in Spanish and the other half in English.
“The schools that we’ve had that in, it’s been a big hit. And I think it will be a big hit here,” Wilbanks tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish.
Coleman will become the county’s first STEAM-focused school integrating the arts in its STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) curriculum. The new school will include a dance studio.
“We think that will be a great draw for students. We’re looking for that to be our signature rollout of that and then we will move that program into some other middle schools,” says Wilbanks.
Five schools will see new additions this year including Camp Creek Elementary, Meadowcreek High, North Gwinnett Middle, Peachtree Ridge High, and Twin Rivers Middle.
