Cobb could see a decrease in property tax

Cobb County residents could soon see a break on their property taxes. An improving economy is behind a new move to partially roll back a two-year old tax increase.

Faced with a sour economy in 2011, Cobb Chairman Tim Lee and other commissioners did the only thing they figured they could do to keep the county in the black. They raised taxes.

That was then. Cobb County residents could soon see a break on their property taxes. An improving economy is behind a new move to roll back a two-year old tax increase.

“But the economic times, they are a-changin’,” said Lee.

“We made a promise we would roll back (the millage rate) as soon as we could and we’re taking steps now to do that,” Lee told WSB’s Pete Combs.

Lee said he hopes the county commission will agree to reduce the millage rate from 11.11 to 11.09. That would amount to a savings of only about $14 on a $200,000 home.

“It’s not huge,” said Lee, “but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Even though the county’s tax digest is down a little from last year, Lee said, there’s an increase in taxes and fees related to new construction starts. That, he said, holds the promise of better days to come.
