ATLANTA — Georgia State Patrol is investigating after a hit-and-run crash involving an Atlanta police officer in Buckhead, according to WSBTV.
It happened just before 9 p.m. on Friday.
According to GSP, a trooper with GSP Nighthawks North DUI Task Force noticed a gray Kia sedan going 61 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour speed zone on Roswell Road NE near Honour Ave NW.
Officials said the trooper tried to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop, initiating a police chase.
GSP said an Atlanta police officer was driving north on Piedmont Road NE trying to turn left into a private driveway. According to GSP, the Kia hit the APD patrol car head-on causing both cars to come to a stop in the roadway. The driver of the Kia and other passengers jumped out of the car and ran towards a nearby parking garage, officials said.
The trooper chased after the suspects, detaining one. Moments later, GSP said another trooper arrived on the scene and deployed his K9 for an area search of the parking garage but was unsuccessful in locating any of the other suspects.
The APD officer was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital. The identity of the officer and extent of the officer’s injuries is unknown at this time.
