One man dead after deadly shooting at Stone Mountain Park

STONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. — A man is dead after an incident at Stone Mountain Park.

Police responded to Stone Mountain Park after receiving reports of gunshots fired at the park around 3:30 p.m.

Park officials say the man came into the park with a gun and began firing. Witnesses heard six shots and that is when police started searching for the suspect, according to John Bankhead with the park’s police department.

“Park officers spotted the individual on top of the mountain,” Bankhead said. “He climbed the fence on top of the mountain.”

When officers spotted him, he asked if they were going to shoot him, and that is when he turned the gun on himself. Bankhead said there is no word on why the suspect was shooting.

The GBI is helping with the investigation.
