ATHENS — Georgia freshman tailback Elijah Holyfield suffered an ankle injury during Saturday's scrimmage, and the extent of the injury is unknown at this point.

There was no immediate word from the team to confirm the injury or its severity. Holyfield was fine during the media viewing period on Saturday, then suffered the injury early in the scrimmage, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.

An injury to Holyfield would be pretty bad news for Georgia, even with starter Nick Chubb on track to play against North Carolina. Sony Michel’s status for the season opener remains uncertain because of his arm injury, but Holyfield – a four-star recruit – had looked very good this preseason and was being prepared for a role in the season opener.

The Bulldogs have Sunday and Monday off before returning to practice on Tuesday. Head coach Kirby Smart’s next scheduled media availability is Wednesday.
