Newly obtained federal documents show $300,000 of air travelers' belongings disappeared on the way through Hartsfield-Jackson airport.
In 2011-2012, at least 416 Atlanta passengers complained to the TSA about lost or damaged items in their luggage. At least two travelers claimed losing $10,000 or more in jewelry. One reported losing thousands of dollars' worth of clothes and shoes.
Tablet computers, auto parts, digital cameras, and expensive sunglasses were also reported missing.
"We've run into problems at checkpoints where people are actually lifting items from bags," industry expert Charlie Leocha tells WSB's Washington bureau. "Recently, we've seen TSA people are caught at home...with the items they stole from people at the airport."
An iPad recently turned up at the home of a TSA officer in Florida.
In Charlotte, a TSA officer is accused of stealing cash from a passenger’s suitcase.
There are no records of Atlanta officers having been caught stealing anything.
The TSA also only reimbursed Atlanta passengers for about $35,000 of the $300,000 of missing items. The agency says it has an online review process with investigators on staff to review claims and talk to witnesses.
