Gwinnett school employees to get pay boost

Employees at the state's largest school district are getting across-the-board raises.

For the first time since 2008, Gwinnett County's school budget will see an increase. The extra $30 million comes from a reduction in cuts and more property tax revenues.

It all means an average raise of almost 4% for teachers. New teachers will get just over $38,000 a year on average.

Bus drivers will get an average raise of $1.25 an hour; nutrition workers will get a 50 cent raise.

CFO Rick Cost tells the Gwinnett Daily Post he credits responsible budgets over the past five years for the new revenues.

Once again, more students are set to attend Gwinnett schools. Next year's overall enrollment will be over 170,000.

But the county keeps getting poorer. Gwinnett ranks in the bottom half in the state in wealth per student.
