The Gwinnett County School Board will announce the names of four new schools opening in the fall of 2015 at its board meeting tonight.

The county has been seeking input on the possible names since school began.

School system spokesperson Sloan Roach tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish a committee was formed for each school to help come up with the finalists.

“They look at individuals who’ve made a significant social contribution; names of the community served by the school; roads; landmarks; there also could be geographic locations that are nearby the school that they want to take into account,” she says.

The schools include the creation of a new cluster to relieve Berkmar and Central Gwinnett.  Opening next year will be a new high school and elementary school, both located on Old Norcross Road in Lawrenceville.

The other two schools include a new elementary for the Meadowcreek cluster and a middle school in the Central Gwinnett cluster.

But new schools means new attendance lines.

“Obviously when you create new schools, you have to move students to go to those new schools,” says Roach.  “Redistricting, we know, is always hard.”

She says there will opportunities for input from the public as more information on those new lines is released.

“I don’t anticipate the board will make a final decision on the attendance zones until probably December at the earliest,” says Roach.
