A 17-year-old girl was killed Sunday in Bulloch County after she was shot in the head while the man she was with was teaching her how to use a handgun, according to the Statesboro Herald.

Kelsey McDuffie was at a home on Arthur Nubern Road early Sunday morning when Adan Keelin, 18, tried to show her how to assemble and disassemble a 9mm semi-automatic handgun.

The gun fired while Keelin was holding it, traveling through his hand and hitting McDuffie in the back of the head.

McDuffie was flown to a hospital in Savannah, where doctors determined she would not survive her injuries.

Her family decided to pursue organ donation and McDuffie was transferred to a hospital in Atlanta Tuesday.

Kelsey’s sister, Kailyn McDuffie, said organ donation is very close to her family’s heart because their father had a heart transplant in 2017.

“Our beautiful baby girl, Kelsey McDuffie, has the ability to be the reason so many people live and we couldn’t be more thankful that we got to share her love and light with so many people while she graced this Earth,” Kailyn McDuffie said.

“She always fiercely stood up for anything she believed in and she could light up a room full of people with her beautiful smile and contagious laugh. Our baby girl is a hero and she will always be our free-spirited firecracker.”

According to Kelsey’s mother, Crystal McDaniel, she could potentially save up to 83 lives through organ donation.

The Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the case. It’s unclear if Keelin is facing any charges.
