Arrests made in death of teen at Cobb graduation party

Three arrests have been made in the death of a 17-year-old boy gunned down at a graduation party last year, Marietta police confirmed on Friday.

The chaotic scene unfolded on May 21, 2022, The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports, when Grayson Green was killed during a party near the entrance to the Walton Village apartments.

At the time, neighbors reportedly estimated around 200 teens were gathered in the street during the graduation party.

Officer-worn body camera footage shows authorities arriving at Walton Village, rushing into the gated community where dozens of teens were fleeing the scene.

Investigators say they have since connected the gathering to a previous party that evening at an Airbnb outside city limits.

Throughout their investigation, authorities determined the teens communicated about the graduation gathering at Walton Village via social media, where the party continued until the deadly shooting.

On Tuesday, two teenage suspects were reportedly arrested in Newport News, Virginia. “A third was already in custody at the Douglas County Jail on unrelated charges,” The AJC’s Chelsea Prince writes.

Siblings Ne’riyah Vargas and Ne’cquo Vargas, both 17 from Cobb County, and 21-year-old Tahkel Beverly Smart of Paulding County are each facing the same eight charges in Green’s death, including malice murder, aggravated assault and the associated gang charges.

“Detectives have worked countless hours gathering evidence and tracking down suspects,” a Marietta police spokesperson said Friday in a news release. “Today, we are thankful to report that the individuals responsible for his death are being held accountable.”
