CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — An effort to change the names of 14 streets and roadways in Clayton County hit a dead end Tuesday evening.
A resolution to rename streets with names “associated with the Confederate States of America” was not voted on because no one would second the motion.
Channel 2′s Candace McCowan spoke with Commissioner DeMont Davis who was the resolution sponsor and the only commissioner ready to vote on it of the five Clayton County Commissioners.
“I was a little surprised and disturbed by it,” said Davis.
The Board Chairman told Channel 2 that there is a clear reason why he didn’t want to vote on the name changes. “I want to get some additional information as it relates to the cost as to how much we would have to pay to the name changes on each street and any other insularly cost that’s related to this move,” said Chairman, Commissioner Jeffery Turner.
The cost was also a concern of others against the name changes.
“I think that it’s expensive and wondering how that’s going to fit in the budget, and also all of the names associated are history,” said Anita Sterling.
Davis said this isn’t the end of his efforts. “I will find out what questions they have and begin to address them accordingly,” he said.
