Anti-gay 'hate group' asks members to boycott Harvey Milk stamp

The American Family Association, which claims to promote "traditional moral values" in media, is urging its members to not accept any mail postmarked with the newly released Harvey Milk stamp.

The U.S. Postal Service released the stamp last week honoring the late San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk, who was one of the first openly gay men elected to public office and represented the Castro before he was assassinated in 1978.

The release marks the first time a U.S. stamp has featured an openly gay elected official.

According to a statement on the AFA's website, dated May 27, 2014, the "stamp was a result of seven years of lobbying by a self-described drag queen."

The statement goes on to call Milk a predator who used his “charm and power to prey on young boys with emotional problems and drug addiction.”

The group tells its members to refuse the Harvey Milk stamp if offered by their local post office and to instead, ask for a stamp of the United States Flag.  They also urge their members to refuse to accept any mail at home or work, postmarked with the stamp.

The AFA has been listed as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center since 2010.
