APD officer’s recovery “nothing short of miraculous”

APD officer Bobby Golden Golden (right) has made "miraculous" strides in recovery from his injuries, but still with a long way to go, says a fellow officer and friend. (GoFundMe)

He still has what are described as extensive serious injuries, but an Atlanta police officer’s recovery in just a few days is said to be “nothing short of miraculous.”

It was Monday night that officer Robert “Bobby” Golden was chasing a suspect on foot when he was hit by a suspected drunk driver on Jonesboro Road. The suspect was also struck.

A colleague and friend of Golden, Chris Mercure, has been providing updates on a GoFundMe page that is benefitting Golden and his family.

Mercure says early Friday morning, a “miraculous breakthrough occurred in Bobby’s Intensive Care Unit room. I was sitting next to his bed and all of a sudden and out of nowhere, Bobby came to full awareness and he began talking with me 100% coherent. We talked for about an hour and a half.”

Nurses treating Golden noted his improvement by asking each other “is that the same patient?”

The GoFundMe page describes officer Golden’s condition as stable, but with a “substantial” recovery road still ahead.

Golden is married with three children. The GoFundMe account hopes to raise $100,000.
