ATLANTA — Another hometown kid has signed a long-term deal to stay with the Atlanta Braves.
Rookie outfielder Michael Harris II and the team agreed to a 8-year, $72 million contract extension Tuesday night after the Braves win over the New York Mets.
The deal runs through the 2030 season and includes a $15 million club option for 2031 and $20 million club option for 2032. The deal will be worth $102 million over 10 years if both options are exercised.
Harris grew up in DeKalb and Henry counties and became a star for Stockbridge High School. The Braves drafted Harris out of high school with No. 98 pick of the 2019 MLB draft.
The Braves called up their No. 1 prospect Harris on May 28. Harris is the youngest player in the majors, but has done nothing but shine in a starting role for his hometown team since his callup.
In just three months, Harris is hitting .287 with 12 homes runs, 13 stolen bases and 39 RBI and won National League Rookie of the Month for June. The centerfielder has also dazzled with his flashy glove.
General manager Alex Anthopoulos and the Braves have now locked up the core of its starting lineup.
The Braves extended third baseman Austin Riley to the most lucrative contract in team history. The team also signed Gwinnett County native Matt Olson through 2030 after they traded for the first baseman.
Star Ronald Acuña and rookie second infielder Vaughn Grissom are under contract through 2028. Second baseman Ozzie Albies and catcher William Contreras are under contract through 2027.
The future is unclear for shortstop Dansby Swanson, who becomes a free agent after the 2022 season.
