Keep your eyes on the road: Atlanta Police Department releases newly designed cars

The Atlanta Police Department (APD) is hitting the road this week with a whole new look for their police cars.

Back in November 2022, the APD announced they were changing the look of their police cars, and those new rides are about to take to the streets.

Out are the old blue cars, and in are black cars with bright blue and red stripes.

It’s all part of a new take-home program allowing officers to take their new rides home with them.

“When we look at the number one reason officers want to stay at the Atlanta Police Department, a take home car is at the top of the list,” said APD Chief Darin Schierbaum.

Last year students from the Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD) were given a challenge to create a new look for APD cars. Besides the new color scheme, the cars feature the symbol of the phoenix and wings along with six stripes to represent each of Atlanta’s zones.

“I’m completely blown away,” said SCAD student Candance Stewart when seeing the cars. “It’s amazing.”

Expect to see the new cars patrolling the city starting Wednesday. The APD is hopeful the take home program will help retain officers, and the newly designed cars will be more visible to deter crime.
