GBI identifies man killed in officer-involved shooting near Ga. Tech campus

ATLANTA — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has identified a man shot and killed by officers Sunday afternoon near the Georgia Tech campus.

Georgia Tech police said the incident happened in the area of 10th and State Street. Students who live in the Home Park area were asked to stay inside.

The GBI said Gray Bell, 40, of Roswell, was armed with a weapon when he was detained by Georgia Tech Police officers and Georgia State Patrol officers on Sunday around 3 p.m.

Investigators said Bell tried to leave the scene, but was boxed in by a GSP patrol car. As officers approached Bell, he got out of his car, pulled out a gun and loaded a round.

Both officers from the Atlanta Police Department and the Georgia State Patrol fired at Bell, who was wounded. He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Investigators later told Channel 2 Action News that officers were called to the area in reference to a person with a gun who was possibly suicidal.

This was the second officer-involved shooting Sunday. Early Sunday morning, an Atlanta police officer shot a man that police say was hitting cars with a metal pipe.

“This man was hitting cars and actually struck another individual before the officer got involved,” Hampton said. “The officer deployed his taser which had a negative effect. The officer transitioned to his service weapon which he discharged multiple times. The perpetrator is down at Grady in surgery.”
