Autonomous shuttles coming to Peachtree Corners

Driverless shuttles are coming to one Gwinnett County city.

The Peachtree Corners City Council voted Tuesday night to approve the $2 million-dollar autonomous shuttle project.

The vehicles, which could hold up to a dozen riders, will run in a dedicated 1.4 mile stretch of Technology Parkway from Peachtree Parkway to Spaulding Drive.

“That lane would be separated from the cars on Tech Parkway with bollards and bus stops at various locations to pick up any riders,” says Brian Bolick, vice president of the engineering consulting firm Atkins which conducted the feasibility study for the city.

Work now begins on the design aspect of the project and choosing which shuttles to use.

Mayor Mike Mason tells WSB’s Sandra Parrish is not just about ridership, but economic development. He hopes the project will attract new technology-based businesses to the city.

“What we really want is companies to come here, to start their businesses, to pay business license fees, (and) to move their families here,” he says.

The shuttle should be up and running by this time next year.
